Sometimes you meet a dog and wonder how he has made it this far. Kai is definitely one of those dogs. He is a 3 year old, handsome, little mixed breed that came to us as an owner surrender with a heart that has been working against the odds since the day he was born.
During his first veterinary exam, we discovered he has a congenital heart defect called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Before birth, every puppy has a small blood vessel that allows blood to bypass the lungs. After that very first breath, it's supposed to close. Kai's never did. For three years, his heart has been working far harder than it was ever meant to. The fact that Kai made it to 3 years old is nothing short of remarkable.
But here's the part that gives us hope: WE CAN SAVE KAI
A specialized cardiac procedure can close that vessel, allowing his heart to work the way it always should have. With surgery, Kai has an excellent chance at a long, happy, normal life filled with walks, couch naps, toys, treats, and a family who loves him.
That family already exists. An incredible foster family welcomed Kai into their home while we searched for answers. They completely fell in love with him and we promised them that when the time came, we would get Kai the surgery he needs. Now, it's time to keep that promise. Kai's surgery and specialty cardiac care are expected to cost more than $8,000. For a small rescue, it's an enormous expense. But when a broken heart can actually be repaired, how do you not try?
