š¾ HOME SWEET HOME
Adopting a Rescue pet is a wonderful thing!
The reward we feel can be heart warming and heart filling! However, buckle up because there is work to do!
It usually takes a while for a rescued animal to adapt and feel comfortable in their new home and with their new family.
The transition period usually depends on the circumstances from which the animal became homeless.
It can take up to a YEAR for a rescued pet to feel safe and secure in your home!
If there was abuse or neglect then the transition time is expected to be longer.
You will hopefully see progress and changes, but it is a step-by-step day by day transition.
It is not as simple as going to a shelter or a rescue organization and adopting an animal.
Sometimes even the shelter or rescue doesnāt know the complete background of the animal, so a lot of this is going to be trial and error with a concentration on minimizing the errors so as not to cause further confusion or setbacks for a dog or cat who is new to your home.
You can definitely get advice from the people who have the pet currently in their care, but please be sure to listen to your gut and if something doesnāt āfitā the advice that was given, you should follow your intuition when it comes down to making this new pet feel safe with you and safe in their new home.
It is going to be wonderful, but itās going to be work. Be very aware of all your interactions with the new pet and whether what you are doing and saying makes them feel unsure of you or safe with you.
There may be things that need to be modified around the home also and once they are used to the environment and itās safe to do they can be reintroduced.
If there other pets in the home then thatās a separate transition process that needs to take place in order to acclimate all pets to each other while keeping the existing pets from feeling like their territory has been invaded and helping the new pet feel
