You’ll notice the dogs have some fancy new collars ✨🐶
Why the new collars? While I pride myself in having amazing relationships with all my dogs, and having great control with them, sometimes your worst fears happen. A couple months ago Onyx ran off at camp, not because she smelled something or chased something, but because she was scared (fu***ng deer flies 😡). I knew the best bet was to have her mom come out to find her, and within 30min of her showing up we found Onyx. She was gone under 2hrs. And while in the moment I stayed calm and collected, the relief and adrenaline crash after was enough to have me finally bite the bullet and buy Garmin Fishing & Hunting tracking and training collars. I am grateful that I have grown my business enough to be able to afford this extra level of safety for the dogs. For almost 7 years of running my business I have only had 3 dogs run off before, all being found in under 2 hours, all incredibly stressful. This is the risk when we let our dogs off leash, all my clients know it and still want to give their dogs this enrichment- Onyx’s moms first question after we found her was if she was kicked out. Answer is no. Onyx is a sensitive girl and we already knew this, she has grown IMMENSELY in our time working together privately and at camp. What she needs and to learn to trust us when she gets scared- same thing as when Chewy ran off at camp last year. For some dogs when scared they go into flight, and when they do I need them to come to me and I will protect them, that’s what we are teaching Onyx now. Having a dog run off with me rarely happens, the collars are just an extra safety measure for when the unexpected happens 🩷

✨Blu✨
Blu has been home with my sister’s family for a week now, and things are starting to stick. Not just with Blu but for my sister too. A lot of times especially with little dogs the thing I see owners do is baby their dogs- constant coddling, over protection, it all creates an insecure and low confidence dog. The thing I was very consistent about her training while she was with me was treating her like the big dogs as much as possible- showing her how capable and brave she can be ✨
This new found confidence and bravery is now put to the test with her new sibling 🐶Aubrey🐶! She’s showing confidence in holding her ground, in setting boundaries, and continuing to create a new relationship. It can be hard for dogs when a new one comes into the household, but my sister and her family are doing a wonderful job of containment, play, and socialization with Aubrey, which creates less stress/conflict for Blu. Throughout Blu’s stay with me we had put her to the test with stress- going out to dog camp, meeting new people & dogs, being handled by new people, going swimming, all things that help build bravery. The biggest takeaway for me from her stay is how capable of a dog she can be when given the right support, and I’m so happy that this is being continued at home 🩷
✨psst✨ stay tuned for Aubrey content in Septemberrrrr 😬🐶🩷

Anticipatory grief is a thief of joy and time

The only way I can describe it is carrying immense fear and grief while Deegan is still alive

Crying over his grey hairs
Crying over him needing rest days more often
Crying because he is slowing down on walks
Crying because more often than not, he just likes to lay down at camp instead of hunting
Crying because he is aging before my eyes

And I’ve felt this for years, since he was 2 years old
He will be 10 this year

I’m trying to reframe how I think about him aging
It’s a gift to be able to see my dog grow through all of these stages of life, and to be his person to care for him, it’s the greatest honor of my life

I had Vermont Dog and Horse Photographer take these photos, not just for these most treasured memories, but to remind me to live in the moment and not let this grief steal the time I have with them 🐶🩷

✨Welcome Blu✨
Miss Blu is my older sister’s dog and will be staying with me for a board & train for the month of July!
Little dogs can often have a lot of fear, anxiety, and lack confidence, which we can safely say this is Blu. Her previous life to living with my sister was not good, she was used for breeding (with poor genetics-yikes!), and was under socialized. At 7.5yrs old, she doesn’t have a lot of experience with other dogs, but does live with 3 cats (and the 80+ foster cats that have gone through their house over the last 6 years!). She barks incessantly at anyone who walks through the door (even if she knows them), is a stage 5 clinger and follows my sister EVERYWHERE, and has accidents inside 💩
My main goals with Blu this month will be to build a routine that is feasible for her family, find things that she likes to do, LET HER BE A DOG (I swear she thinks she’s a cat 🙃), and build confidence in new situations. By addressing all of these things we can then focus on the more obvious issues like the barking and accidents. Most of all, I want to show Blu that even though the world can be scary, she can be brave and we are here to support her. 💖
