The squash babies are getting pollinated!

First squash babies of the season to always arrive are the acorn squash. Whatever variety you choose to plant from the acorn family is a guarantee to produce a good crop. Plus, most of the varieties are bush style, which allows home gardeners to grow less plants and still get a large yield without having to step over vines running all over the place.

Our maritime northwest climate does so well for the acorn squash plants. You can plant as last as the middle of June and still get a decent harvest.

Are you growing any Acorn squash?

Lemons are growing nicely! You can see littles that are yellowing and have stopped growing. I will be removing these so they stop taking energy. I will also prune off a couple lemons from large clusters. Meyer lemons tend to over produce for what a tree can hold and it is best to prune to 1 or 2 per cluster.

The second picture shows summer flowers forming. I unfortunately am going to cut these off as well because they will not ripen in time and it is taking energy away from the fruit development.

First Italian plums of the season.

I will be spending the next week harvesting on a daily basis as they all slowly ripen (quickly with this heat) on the tree.

Once I get everything harvested it will be time to prune the tree back for the year. With stone fruit you want to summer prune to help maintain size and shape.

Honey Mustard Pickling Brine Trial

Tried a new recipe for pickling vegetables.

I made a honey mustard pickle brine and I tried it with radishes, carrots, beets, and turnips.

After you pickle something it's always best to let it sit for a few weeks.

Stay tuned and I'll be doing a taste test in a month to let you know what I think.

Happy July Everyone!!

Now is the time to get all your seeds back out and start getting everything seeded for your fall and overwinter garden.

When stuff is seeded in July it will allow the fall/winter crops to get to full maturity before the cold dark days. It is also a great time to get those plants started that are going to live out through the winter and produce for early spring crops.

Crops are less likely to bolt when seeded in the heat and have decreasing day length versus the early spring where the sun is increasing quickly and temperatures fluctuate too frequently. Which is why the fall/winter/Overwinter brassica families do so well.

What are some of your simple joys in life?

I love growing garlic.
I love braiding garlic.

These are some of the simple joys in my life.

Garlic braids are done and ready to hang dry. I don't think they turned out as good as I was imagining but I do like the little bit of contrast the lavender gives with the garlic. Someday I will be good at this skill.

❤️

Garlic is about 80 percent dry. Today is braiding day before it gets too brittle.
