šIt's TiiIIIIIiiiiMmMeeeeee...š
The 4th of July holiday is rapidly approaching!
The hospital will have shortened hours on Thursday the 3rd and closed on Monday the 7th, returning to our normal schedule on Tuesday.
Some tips to set up you and your pet for success:
āIf your pet is anxious with the festivities and requires medications, please make sure you are stocked up before the weekend! Thundershirts, calming chews, sprays, and diffusers are just some of the over-the-counter aids available for those with milder symptoms.
āHave a safe space! Do not leave your pet unattended, especially if the area they are left in has space for them to escape or injure themselves- no space is too small when your pet is scared! It is not unheard of that pets have tried to squeeze themselves through gates, dig through doors, fall down stairs etc. if they are seeking a safe place to hide. Make sure their collar is a safe break-away style, so that the risk of them getting stuck somewhere is reduced.
āMake sure your pet has contact info on them- if your pet is microchipped make sure your info is current, make sure that your pet has tags with contact information that is up to date.
āBe cautious when mixing alcohol, cookout foods, and fireworks around pets- pets will try and eat them, will try and "catch" fireworks as they take off, will lick up a bottle on the ground, will steal food and utensils that smell like it off the table when you're distracted and many of these scenarios turn into emergencies when your veterinarian is not open!
ā Many of our favorite cookout meals are toxic and/or dangerous for our pets: do not offer your dog any meats that have been seasoned or covered in sauce (no bones, nothing high in fats and fried) no grapes or raisins, onions, garlic, avocado, chocolates or treats made with xylitol. If you aren't sure, don't feed it!
āIt is okay to talk to your neighbor about your concerns for your anxious pet before the festivities begin! Whether this just means asking your neighbor to be mindful or to be on the lookout for an escape artist, it is always best to be honest about your concerns!
If you have an emergency while the office is closed, please refer to our attached list of local clinics!
We wish you all a happy, safe, and fun holiday weekend!
