Our pets can be very good at hiding changes in their health, especially as they get older. Sometimes the first signs of a problem show up in bloodwork or urine before you notice anything different at home.

Back-to-school season is a big adjustment - not just for kids, but for pets too.

After a summer of extra attention and a full house, suddenly being left alone for longer periods can be stressful.

One of the best ways to help is by easing into the new routine before school starts. Try leaving the house for gradually longer periods so your pet can adjust little by little. Since pets thrive on consistency, getting back into a regular schedule for meals, walks, and playtime can also make the transition easier.

Daily exercise is another great way to set your pet up for success. A walk, game of fetch, or play session helps burn off energy while giving them some quality time with you before you are gone.

When they are home alone, enrichment can help keep boredom at bay. Puzzle toys, frozen peanut butter in a Kong, or even pet-friendly TV can provide mental stimulation. Some pets also find comfort in a favorite blanket, a new toy, or even a T-shirt that smells like their favorite person.

August 22: National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day

Here is a surprising statistic: only about 40% of cat owners take their cats to the veterinarian regularly, compared to 82% of dog owners.

Why the difference?

Cats are incredibly good at hiding pain and illness, so they often seem perfectly healthy even when something isn't right. Many people also think of cats as lower maintenance, especially if their vaccines aren't due every year. And let's be honest, getting a cat into a carrier isn't always easy!

Annual wellness exams are one of the best ways to catch health concerns early, before they become more serious. These visits also give us the opportunity to recommend bloodwork or f***l testing when appropriate, update vaccines, discuss parasite prevention, and make sure your cat is staying as healthy as possible.

Even if your cat spends all of their time indoors, regular checkups are an important part of helping them live a long, healthy life.

A little scratching every now and then is normal but if your pet seems to be scratching, licking, chewing, or rubbing themselves constantly, it's usually a sign that something else is going on.

Itchy skin isn't a diagnosis, it's a symptom.

Some of the most common causes include environmental allergies, food allergies, flea allergies, skin infections, or external parasites like fleas, mites, and lice. The good news is that itchiness is treatable, but finding the right treatment starts with figuring out what's causing it.

If your pet has been scratching more than usual, don't assume they'll just grow out of it. Addressing the problem early can help prevent skin infections and keep your pet much more comfortable.

Taking your pet camping or hiking this summer? A little prep before you leave can help prevent a lot of headaches on the trail.

Make sure your pet has proper identification, including a collar with current tags and a registered microchip. It's also smart to keep a recent photo, vaccination records, medications, and any important medical information easily accessible, just in case.

If your adventures take you away from town, consider packing a pet first aid kit. Our Eagle Vet Trail Dog Kits include basic first aid supplies that can come in handy for minor cuts, scrapes, and paw injuries while you're out exploring.

Before you head out, double-check that your pet is up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Summer adventures often mean more exposure to parasites.

Please help us welcome Kennady to the Eagle Vet team!

Kennady is joining us as a Veterinary Technician and brings with her a lifelong love of animals that started while growing up on a farm. That experience helped shape the hardworking, compassionate person she is today and gave her an appreciation for the bond people share with their pets.

Kennady recently moved to Idaho with her family and is excited to put down roots here and explore everything the area has to offer. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, getting outdoors, traveling, and hanging out with her dog.

One of Kennady’s favorite parts of veterinary medicine is getting to know both pets and their people and helping make visits to the clinic a little less stressful and a little more comfortable.

Pool days, lake trips, and water adventures are one of the best parts of summer but water safety for pets goes beyond just knowing how to swim.

Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and factors like breed, age, body type, and confidence level can affect how comfortable they are in the water. Even strong swimmers should always be monitored.

Once the swimming is over, there are a few less obvious things to keep in mind. Dogs who swim frequently or are prone to ear issues can trap moisture deep in their ear canals, creating an environment where infections can develop. Using a general ear cleanser after swimming can help dry excess water and lower that risk.

And for those extra enthusiastic swimmers, there is even a condition called Swimmer’s Tail. Dogs use their tails like rudders in the water, and after prolonged swimming, overworked muscles can become painful and require treatment.

It is also important to be mindful of where your dog drinks. Standing water can harbor bacteria called Leptospirosis, which can lead to serious liver and kidney issues if contracted. Luckily, there is a vaccine to protect against Leptospirosis. If your dog is not vaccinated and you are interested, please give us a call!
