The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe's Wakpa Waste' Animal Shelter (WWAS) is a safe haven for unwanted animals and pets seized by tribal animal care & control. WWAS networks with shelters and rescues throughout the state to help animals get a second chance in life through adoption. Spayed/neutered animals current on vaccinations become available for adoption at WWAS, and each week animals are transporte

d to adoption partners to make room for more animals. To sign up on the working-cat wait list, please contact Ethel Morgan at 605-964-7387 or email her at [email protected]. WWAS also assists community members with a free pet food (the food bank is open M-F from 3-4pm). WWAS will post pet rehoming ads for CRST community members to support you with self-rehoming.

Cats are loving, intelligent, and wonderful companions, but they also depend on us to make responsible choices for their health and well-being. One important issue every cat owner and animal lover should understand is the importance of spaying and neutering. Cats can reproduce very quickly, and without proper planning, a small number of cats can lead to thousands or even millions of kittens over several generations. Many of these kittens may end up without safe homes, food, veterinary care, or loving families, contributing to the growing problem of pet overpopulation and overcrowded animal shelters. Spaying and neutering not only helps prevent unwanted litters, but can also provide health and behavioral benefits for cats. Responsible cat care goes beyond providing food and shelter—it means regular veterinary checkups, vaccinations, nutritious meals, clean water, a safe environment, identification such as a microchip, and plenty of affection and enrichment. If you are thinking about bringing a cat into your family, consider adopting from a local shelter or rescue organization and giving a homeless cat a second chance at a happy life. If your cat has not been spayed or neutered, talk with a veterinarian about the appropriate time and options. Most importantly, remember that every kitten is a living being who deserves a safe, loving, lifelong home. By choosing adoption, supporting spay-and-neuter programs, keeping cats safely indoors or supervised outdoors, and educating others about responsible pet ownership, we can all help reduce animal suffering and create a kinder future for cats everywhere.
