A Note of Transparency 🐾
We are so thankful for all the feedback and support on our last post. Many of you reached out with questions and concerns, so we wanted to take a moment to address a few of the big ones.
💉 Why can’t veterinarians just spay/neuter for free?
We are very fortunate to work with veterinarians who give us discounted rates. But spay/neuter isn’t free for them either. Every surgery requires an extra set of trained hands, anesthesia, sterile equipment, sutures, medications, and follow-up care. Our vets donate what they can, but they also have staff and bills to pay to keep their doors open. Without them, we couldn’t help the animals we do—and we’re so grateful for the support they give us.
☎️ “I tried to call and couldn’t get an answer.”
Most calls to the shelter come straight to me as the Director, since my number is the first option people hit on the directory. At any given time, I may already be with an adopter, speaking with someone who’s dropping off donations, out assisting Animal Control with a hoarding, cruelty, or neglect case, or on the phone with law enforcement. The same goes for our Animal Control line—we receive numerous calls every day and do our best to answer them or return them as quickly as possible.
The good news is, we now have an office assistant who is absolutely wonderful. She is at the shelter from 12–4 p.m. every day we’re open, and she can take your call during those hours to make sure your questions and needs are addressed.
⏰ “I came by and was told to return after 12.”
Our doors open to the public at 12:00 p.m. every day we’re open. From 7:30–11:00 a.m., our staff is cleaning, feeding, and making sure kennels are safe and sanitary before visitors come in. At 11:00, kennel staff take their lunch and return at 11:30—then we open for adopters at noon. We know it can be frustrating to be told to return later, but we have to stick to this routine to ensure the animals are properly cared for before we welcome guests.
We hope this clears up some of the questions. We’re not perfect, but we are trying—every single day. And while we may be exhausted, we are committed to these animals and will always keep pushing for them.
Thank you for standing with us, for asking questions, and for caring. Transparency matters, and so does your support. 💙🐾
