Debunking a popular belief

Garlic for dogs 🧄…let’s clear this up 👇

Garlic often gets labeled “toxic” because it’s related to onions, but here’s the nuance: garlic contains about 1/15th the amount of the compound linked to toxicity and is actually recognized as a safe ingredient in commercial pet foods (AAFCO).

In small, appropriate amounts, garlic provides allicin, which may support:
❤️ Heart health
🛡️ Immune function
🦠 Antimicrobial support

The studies often cited to claim harm? They used extreme doses…the equivalent of feeding a 70 lb dog ~245 cloves of garlic in one week (yes, really). Even then, no dogs showed outward symptoms, just minor microscopic changes in some red blood cells.

The amounts in this graphic fall well within safe daily feeding guidelines 👍

🐈 For added context: the National Research Council has even set a historical safe intake for cats at 17 mg/kg of body weight, further highlighting that dose matters.

Bottom line:
Garlic isn’t the villain - it’s the amount that matters.

📌 Save this for reference & always stick to proper serving sizes 🐶🐱

My dog is my best friend,
With qualities, no human can match,
He is loyal to the very core,
Our hearts have become attached.

He has taught me that the simple things,
Really, are the best,
Exercise, sustanance, joy and fun,
And plenty of rewarding rest.

He has no interest in trivial things,
With little need to impress,
He doesn't need to style his hair,
Or choose a way to dress.

What you see is what you get,
And when you look into his eyes,
You will see a soul that's beautiful,
A place where true love resides.

I never need to explain to him
How I feel, or when I'm sad,
He's instinctively aware of everything
From the good vibes to the bad.

With him, I'm never lonely
He brings so much to my days,
And that is why I love him
And his kind and caring ways ..

The Dogs We Unmade by Anneka Svenska

Once, I was built for something.
The old centuries still breathe inside my ribs.

I am a Malinois — a body tuned to flight and flame.
Shaped to leap, to guard, to search, to save.
Now I am told, “be easy,” lie still on a sofa that feels like a cage.
My muscles hum for orders that never come.

I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors stood between their people and the bear;
courage ran hot as iron in their veins.
Now I am asked to be soft, compliant, small—
and punished when my inheritance answers back.

I am a Beagle.
I once sang the world’s map with my nose,
a bell that rang for life itself.
Now a silent shock tightens my throat,
and I am called with fingers that never learned my music.

I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
Down in the dark I was lightning—
a whistle of paws through rat-run stone.
Now I am glass on a cushion, legs unused,
lifted like an ornament, set down like a worry.

I am a Labrador Retriever.
Joy was a cold pond and a clean splash—
a bird carried home, soft-mouthed, radiant.
Now I grow heavy by the radiator,
a babysitter with a broken compass.

I am a Jack Russell.
I was bred to square my chest to fear,
to face down the hole that bit back.
Now my spark is called “naughty,”
and they file me into the shape of a quiet room.

I am a Siberian Husky.
I knew the long white hush and the drum of snow,
a horizon that kept its promises.
Now the world is four walls and a sour lawn.
I dig to bury the ache in my bones.

I am a Border Collie.
Made to waltz with a shepherd, to pour order out of chaos,
to work until the stars came out in my eyes.
Now, for want of sheep, I gather bicycles and children—
and am scolded for being faithful to the blueprint in my blood.

I am all of these.
I am a dog of the 21st century—
pretty, packaged, compliant on paper—
and also a someone, hammered and honed by purpose.

Eight or ten hours alone is not comfort.
It is a clock with no hands.
I bark, I dig, I shred, I break—
or I sink, go silent, thin into a shadow.
This is not mischief. This is despair.

You give me a soft bed and a full bowl—
and wonder why I look away.
It’s because the road I was forged to run
doesn’t fit inside your living room.

If you love me—if my blue eyes or sleek coat called to you—
but your life cannot hold the work my breed still begs for,
do not buy me. Do not adopt me.

If you want my look but not my fire,
if you think love alone can rewrite a lineage,
do not buy me. Do not adopt me.

Yes, I am modern.
But my pulse still drums with fighter, hunter, puller, protector, guide.
History moves in my marrow.
Please, choose with the weight of that in your hands.

And if you must leave me, think of two instead of one—
so the hours won’t gnaw so deep.
Your workday is my winter.

I am a dog of now,
and every dog that stood before me.
I ask only for the life I was meant to live.

This is a difficult subject, but these thoughts help us to reflect what an honor it is to be loved by a dog and our role in their lives.

Every dog deserves to leave this world knowing they were cherished. They don’t ask for much—just love, attention, and a little kindness—but what they give in return is immeasurable. For the short time they are here, they share their whole hearts with us: their joy, their loyalty, their unconditional love. Every wag, every nuzzle, every quiet moment of trust is a gift, and the least we can do is ensure that their final days are filled with comfort, warmth, and the knowledge that they mattered.

Saying goodbye to a beloved dog is one of the hardest parts of loving them. The grief is profound, a quiet ache that lingers long after their paws have left the floor. And yet, even in that sorrow, there is solace. Because love does not end when their body does. It remains in every memory: the way they used to curl up on your lap, the way their tail thumped against the floor at the sound of your voice, the gentle pressure of their paw against your hand. Their pawprints are forever etched on your heart.

I’ve held a dog in those final moments, feeling their breathing slow, seeing the trust and love shining in their eyes, knowing I was their forever person. It is painful, yes—but it is also an honor. To be that anchor, that comfort, that presence in a life that gave you everything it had, is one of the deepest expressions of love.

Let us commit to giving every dog that gift: a life where they are wanted, cherished, and celebrated; and an ending where they are safe, warm, and loved. Because the love they give is endless, and their memory should be honored in every gentle act we can offer. 🌈🐾

I have a companion of the furry kind
He's always at my side,
With wagging tail and joyful bark,
He accompanies me with pride.

Through fields and parks, we roam and play,
His spirit wild and free,
He chases dreams beneath the sun,
A friend so dear to me.

With gentle eyes and loyal heart,
He understands my soul,
In every moment that we share,
He makes my spirit whole.

When evening falls and stars appear,
He cuddles close at night,
A guardian with a tender nudge,
My comfort and my light.

In laughter bright and love we share,
Our bond will never break,
For in this life and all it brings,
My life he helps to make ...
