The Bichon Frise originated in the Mediterranean region, likely descending from the Barbet (a type of water spaniel) and was part of a group of small, fluffy white dogs collectively known as “Barbichon” types—which included the Maltese, Havanese, and Bolognese.

The Bichon Frise gained popularity in France, particularly during the Renaissance, and became a favorite among European nobility, especially during the time of King Henry III. Despite falling out of favor after the French Revolution, the breed survived as a street and circus performer due to its charm and intelligence.

The name Bichon Frise means “curly lap dog” in French (frisé = curly). The breed was officially recognized by the French Kennel Club in 1933 and later by the American Kennel Club in 1972.
