It’s not uncommon for me to getting message about a anxious dog for grooming.
There’s different reasons why a dog maybe anxious for grooming, helping them over come this starts at home.
I recommend getting in a cheap electric toothbrush and rub your dog at home with it. From their nose to tail. Tapping their nails with it, feet, butt, you name it. This gets them use to clippers as well as nail trimming. Do this every night for about 5-10 minutes followed by a reward. The key is consistency.
Allowing your dog to have proper exposure is essential! If your dog never leaves the yard they are at high risk of having anxiety when they do. Make it effort to walk, find some low populated trails, let them stop and sniff. Go their pace. Bring training treats
Get a boogy board. According to Mind your manners telling them place and using treats to get your dog to stand on a boogy board helps build confidence and trust. Make this a fun activity for you both.
Listen to your dogs needs. Maybe short cut and style is more beneficial for them vs long and fluffy. It’s not what you may want but it maybe what the dog prefers. Especially if they are not tolerating brushing.
Dont make it into a huge deal dropping your dog off. Lock those leashes, shorten that leash, don’t make it so the groomer has to chase your dog around. This stresses out your pet. Imagine someone hovering over you and chasing you as you try to get away.
Also don’t tell them it’s okay, oh he’s shaking, I love you, I’ll be back, you’re giving your dog a reason to worry. Just hand the leash over, turn around and go. Trust me, 30 seconds your dog will accept his fate of being groomed.
Finding a groomer that best suits your dogs needs. Word of mouth is more powerful! Ask friends, people you know who they use. Don’t be afraid to walk out of an appointment if staff makes you feel unwelcome. If you ever need recommendations please reach out to me 😇
