🦔 Did you know Spike the North American porcupine LOVES veggies? Feel free to tell your kids. 😉 Sweet potatoes are one of their favorite crunchy snacks! 🥔💛 With over 30,000 quills for protection, Spike doesn’t need to worry about sharing… but we think he'd still rather keep the sweet potato to himself.

On an all new episode of “As the Dirt Flies…”

Psst! At the prairie dog lookout, two chatterboxes swap the juiciest tidbits while their busy buddy hustles by with hay. Who knew zoo life came with so much drama?

You can see all new episodes LIVE daily (10am-5pm) right here at the Lake Superior Zoo! Thanks to our Keeper Apprentice Alyssa for catching this great shot!

Summertime at the Zoo looks like this…
Our Zoo Campers hard at work (and play!) putting the finishing touches on their animal posters before sharing their discoveries with their camp friends. From researching favorite species to creating colorful presentations, these young wildlife enthusiasts are learning, laughing, and connecting with animals in unforgettable ways.

It’s all part of what makes summer at the Lake Superior Zoo so special — curiosity, creativity, and a whole lot of animal magic.

Mischief Level: Expert

Cotton-top tamarins are arboreal, meaning they spend almost all their time in the trees. With lightning-fast reflexes, strong grips, and incredible balance, they navigate the canopy with the greatest of ease — leaping, climbing, and dashing from branch to branch like tiny furry acrobats.

Their treetop lifestyle helps them find food, avoid predators, and keep in close contact with their family group. And let’s be honest… it also makes for some pretty impressive monkey parkour! 🐒✨

🔊💛 Meet Bam Bam, our Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill — and resident big personality!
When he’s not showing off his striking beak, Bam loves to make his presence known with a little clucking and a flashy wing display.

Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbills are native to southern Africa, where they’re often called “flying bananas” thanks to their bright yellow bills. They use vocal calls and body language — just like Bam Bam here — to communicate with each other.

🎥 Turn up the volume and watch Bam Bam strut his stuff!

A Fond Farewell to Our Executive Director, Haley Hedstrom

It’s hard to put into words how much Haley has meant to the Lake Superior Zoo. She first joined our team in 2018 as Director of Marketing & Development, and in 2020 — in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic — stepped into the role of Executive Director. She worked tirelessly with the City and our staff to ensure the Zoo could continue operating and weather an incredibly challenging time.

During her tenure, the Zoo achieved major milestones — including successfully navigating a rigorous Association of Zoos & Aquariums accreditation in 2022 (something the Zoo does every 5 years), moving forward plans for our new main building, and expanding access through programs like Zoo for All and DEAI event tickets. Under her leadership, the Zoo also welcomed exciting new species such as red pandas, coyotes, and caribou, and provided a safe home for over 200 animals rescued from SeaQuest Roseville.

Reflecting on her time here, Haley shared:
"It has been the honor of a lifetime to be a part of the LSZ Team over the past eight years. I’m deeply grateful for our incredible staff, whose passion and dedication bring the zoo’s mission to life every single day, and for our community, whose support has made so much possible. I’m excited to cheer on what’s next for the zoo and have full confidence in Interim Executive Director Noah Hobbs as he steps into this role. Thank you for the memories, the milestones, and the shared commitment to creating a place where people connect with wildlife and nature. The future is bright for the Lake Superior Zoo!"

Haley’s vision, dedication, and contagious optimism have shaped the Zoo in ways that will be felt for years to come. While we are sad to see her go, we’re thrilled she will be bringing her talents to Visit Duluth, where her energy and forward-thinking spirit will benefit the entire city.

Haley, thank you for everything you’ve done for the Zoo, our animals, our guests, and our community. We can’t wait to see the big things you and your new team will accomplish next!

Our Story

Duluth’s Lake Superior Zoo is the only zoo in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Since 1923, it has provided up-close animal experiences that inspire connections to wildlife and action towards conservation. The zoo’s picturesque property includes rocky hillsides, majestic pines and beautiful Kingsbury Creek. It is one of the region’s most popular year-round attractions.
