In honor of Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week, we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate some of the most hardworking, compassionate, and dedicated members of our All Creatures Veterinary Hospital family! 🐾

💕 Meet our amazing veterinary team members — Cecilia, Mel, and our wonderful newest addition, Miss Shelby! 💕

These girls have continued to show their love and dedication to our patients each and every day. Whether they're comforting a nervous puppy, caring for a sick kitty, assisting during surgery, or giving extra cuddles to a pet who needs reassurance, they give 110% of themselves to every fur baby who walks through our doors! We are also so excited to welcome Miss Shelby to our team! She has already become a wonderful addition to our veterinary family, and we can't wait for all of you to get to know her! 🥰

🐾 DID YOU KNOW? Veterinary technicians wear MANY different hats! 🐾

Many people don't realize just how much knowledge, skill, and responsibility goes into being a veterinary technician. In human medicine, many of these responsibilities are handled by entirely different departments and specialized professionals. In veterinary medicine, our incredible technicians do it ALL! 💪🩺

💉 Phlebotomists – Drawing blood and collecting samples for important diagnostic testing.

🩻 Radiology Technicians – Taking X-rays to help veterinarians diagnose injuries and illnesses.

😷 Surgical & Anesthesia Technicians – Preparing patients for surgery, assisting veterinarians, monitoring anesthesia, and helping ensure safe recoveries.

🦷 Dental Technicians – Performing dental cleanings under veterinary supervision, obtaining dental radiographs, and assisting with dental procedures.

🔬 Laboratory Technicians – Running bloodwork, examining samples, and helping identify medical concerns.

💊 Nurses & Patient Caregivers – Administering medications as directed, monitoring hospitalized patients, placing IV catheters, and providing critical nursing care.

❤️ And perhaps one of their most important roles — being a source of comfort, compassion, and love for our patients when they need it most.

They are the gentle hands holding your nervous pet, the reassuring voices during uncomfortable procedures, and the caring hearts watching over your fur babies while they're away from you.

Veterinary medicine isn't always easy. It requires long hours, physical strength, endless patience, emotional resilience, continued education, and an incredible amount of love for animals. Some days are filled with happy puppy kisses and kitten cuddles, while others bring difficult cases, emergencies, and heartbreaking goodbyes.

Through it all, our team continues to show up with compassion, dedication, and a genuine love for what they do. 🥹❤️

🐾 ON TODAY’S EDITION OF MEET YOUR VETERINARY STAFF! 🐾

👨‍⚕️ Meet Dr. Gunimat Samra, DVM!

Dr. Samra’s love for animals began at a young age while growing up around animals on a farm. His early experiences inspired him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and dedicate his work to helping pets and the families who love them.

🎓 Education:
Dr. Samra earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of the Pacific and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Western University of Health Sciences.

🩺 Special Interests:
Preventive medicine, sick and urgent care visits, senior pet care, and client education. Dr. Samra especially enjoys helping pet parents understand their pet’s health and creating practical, compassionate treatment plans.

🐶 Meet Zazu:
His sweet and loyal black Labrador Retriever—and a very loved member of the family!

✨ Fun Fact:
Dr. Samra began his veterinary career right here in the East Bay as a veterinary technician in Castro Valley before becoming a veterinarian!

🥾 Outside the Hospital:
He enjoys hiking, spending time with family, watching basketball and football, and attending outdoor events.

🐾🩺 On Today’s Edition of “Get to Know Our Veterinary Staff”

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to one of our new doctors and owners! 💕🐶🐱

As many of our longtime clients know, our beloved Dr. Downes has been an important part of our veterinary family for many years. As he gets older, he is looking forward to slowing down a little, spending more well-deserved time with his family, and cutting back on his demanding veterinary schedule.

To help make that transition possible—and to make sure our patients continue receiving the attentive, compassionate care they deserve—we have welcomed an amazing team of additional veterinarians to our hospital. 🩺🐾

Our new doctors are helping share the busy day-to-day responsibilities of veterinary medicine while allowing Dr. Downes to continue seeing the patients and families he loves, just at a more manageable pace. ❤️

We want to give all of you the opportunity to get to know the wonderful doctors and team members behind the scenes!

Stay tuned to learn a little more about who they are, what inspired them to become a veterinarian, their special interests in veterinary medicine, and a few fun facts about them outside of the hospital! 🐕🐈🩺💕

Dr. Harinder Judge
Role/Title: Veterinarian

Dr. Harinder Judge has been dedicated to the care and well-being of animals for more than 25 years. A graduate of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), India, he has built his career around providing compassionate, high-quality veterinary care to pets and the people who love them.

In addition to his extensive experience in general veterinary medicine, Dr. Judge has developed strong surgical expertise in soft tissue surgery and selected orthopedic procedures. Throughout his career, he has successfully performed a wide range of surgical treatments, helping pets recover from injury, illness, and other conditions while improving their quality of life.
Known for his genuine kindness and commitment to both his patients and colleagues, Dr. Judge values the relationships he has built with families, friends, and fellow veterinary professionals throughout his career. His passion for animals extends far beyond the clinic and into his own home, where he shares his life with a special group of beloved pets—including a handicapped Terrier, a senior Beagle, a blind cat, and a playful Golden Retriever who keeps everyone smiling.

Dr. Judge has a special interest in caring for exotic pets and is passionate about helping all species live healthier, happier lives. He believes every animal deserves understanding, respect, and exceptional medical care, regardless of age, ability, or species.
When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Judge enjoys spending time with his wife and their two daughters, who are the center of his world. His dedication to family, combined with his lifelong love of animals, continues to inspire his work every day.
With over two decades of experience, advanced surgical skills, and a lifelong passion for animal welfare, Dr. Judge is committed to providing exceptional care for every patient that comes through the door.

Dr. Larry M. Downes
Role/Title: Veterinarian
Dr. Larry Downes has dedicated nearly 40 years to the veterinary profession, providing compassionate, high-quality care to pets and their families. A graduate of the University of California, Davis in 1986, Dr. Downes has developed extensive experience in small animal medicine, with a particular interest and specialty in the care of Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Downes enjoys spending time with his family, including his two adult children and grandchild. A devoted animal lover, he shares his home with three dogs and values every opportunity to travel, attend the theater, and enjoy a good book. His lifelong passion for veterinary medicine, combined with decades of experience and dedication, continues to make a positive impact on the lives of pets and their owners.

Here are some interesting Veterinary Myths for the day :

Myth: You can give pets human pain medication.
Fact: Many human medications—including ibuprofen and acetaminophen—can be extremely dangerous for pets.

Myth: Cats purr only when they’re happy.
Fact: Cats may also purr when they’re stressed, frightened, uncomfortable, or in pain.

Myth: If you don’t see fleas, your pet doesn’t have them.
Fact: Fleas can be difficult to spot, and most of their life cycle occurs in the environment.

Myth: Heartworm disease only affects dogs.
Fact: Cats can also develop heartworm disease, even if they live indoors.

Myth: A pet’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s.
Fact: Pet mouths contain plenty of bacteria and should not be considered “clean.”

Myth: Pets naturally know which plants and foods are safe.
Fact: Curious pets may eat toxic plants, medications, chemicals, or food.

Myth: An overweight pet is simply “extra fluffy.”
Fact: Excess weight can contribute to arthritis, diabetes, breathing problems, and a shorter lifespan.

Myth: A warm, dry nose means your pet is sick.
Fact: A pet’s nose can change throughout the day. Appetite, energy level, and behavior are better health indicators.

Myth: Indoor pets don’t need parasite prevention.
Fact: Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can enter the home, and heartworm disease can affect indoor pets too.

Myth: Pets only need to visit the veterinarian when they’re sick.
