Last post I talked about how to take care of your bear, this time it's all about velvet antlers.
With archery season starting next week, the bucks will still be in velvet. You/I can preserve the velvet IF its handled correctly.

1️⃣ First off, velvet is live tissue and must be treated as such. I tell hunters to treat the velvet as you would treat the meat---get it in a cooler asap. (I have cooler space for clients)

2️⃣ Next, try not to "handle" the velvet antlers with your hands. And keep the antlers from bumping, rubbing, dragging on the ground. If possible have one person handle the head (by the ears or neck) the whole time the deer is being field dressed, loaded and caped. Anyone who has delta with velvet antlers knows how easily that velvet can come off.

When I get a velvet buck in, I can perseve what he has at the time, but I cannot put back what has been rubbed off.
Remember, the better you take care of your animal in the field the better your mount will look when finished!

Bear season starts in a couple of weeks! Be prepared before you get your bear down.

First off--its probably still going to be HOT! Get your bear cleaned and cooled ASAP. At the very least get him skinned and in the shade. If you are unsure about skinning, talk to me first--ill let you know what to do. Quality of finished mount includes skinning.

I will have cooler space for client hides, so after CPAW gets their seal in, give me a call and we can make arrangements to get you bear taken care of.

Finally, there are lots of options out there for bears besides rugs. I do life-size, shoulder mounts and soft tans. I will also send your skull off to be professionally Beatle cleaned and whitened.

What an honor to mount this once in a lifetime trophy! Desert bighorn from our own Slickrock, Colorado--just 30mins from my house.
The hours spent were well worth it. The base is 100% custom and the mount is removable.

Another "nose dive" deer. I actually did this one several years ago and some said it was not fixable, but...in the end, you almost couldn't tell.

This amazing buck took a nose dive off the wall (usually when this happens the hanger fails-this time it was the stud). Fixed the broken antler/ear, gave him a good cleaning, and touched up paint.
Im told this buck may be featured in a future Kings Calender.

Abert--yes..its Abert, not Albert-- squirrel finished up nice.
