"Chubby" - 2015 Buckskin AQHA Gelding. Chubby is one of those horses that is a joy to be around. Honest, gentle, solid, and simple! He has always proven dependable and does not need consistent riding to stay gentle. In the year and a half that we have owned him, Chubby has enjoyed several vacation times out on pasture and always saddled right back up without a hitch. Chubbs is seasoned out on the trail, confident in varied terrain, and familiar with riding out alone or with a group. He enjoys being out and walks down the trail with his ears perked and a purpose in his stride, but he is not hot or jiggy. He knows how to ride one-handed, move his body off of your leg, and has cool, calm experience over many obstacles including tarps, bridges, blowup toys and more! Chubby is very cowy, has tagged calves and gathered cattle with us, and is fun to ride on the ranch. The great thing about him is that he is truly content to be a trail horse or leisure companion, too. He has the disposition and experience to fit a variety of horse owners from the intermittent trail rider to the jack-of-all-trades! "Skippy" - 2018 Gray AQHA Gelding. In a good way, Skippy is a horse of simple taste. Born and raised in our program, he has always had a quiet demeanor and wanted to be good, while remaining attuned to his rider’s cues and intentions. His perfect life would be out on the trail with a rider who enjoys horseback riding as a relaxing hobby! Skippy has always come back honest from periods of time off and rides well in a group as well as being capable of riding out alone. He has a good neck rein, knows how to move his body off your leg, rates up and down when asked and has spent time gathering cattle and pushing newborn calves out to pasture. Skippy has lived and ridden around plenty of wildlife like birds, rabbits, deer, antelope and an occasional elk herd, and has easily handled countless water crossings and natural challenges. He is not fast or fancy but has always been reliable and willing to try whatever is asked of him! Skippy stands 15.1 hands and weighs approximately 1300lbs on our livestock scale. "Keno" - 2017 Palomino AQHA Gelding. Compact, handy and just coming 9 years old, Keno is a cool little horse! With a background in ranch and pen work, he knows how to neck rein and use himself nicely when needed. He can put his head level and travel out well for a smaller horse, stop with his hind end, catch his lead changes and work off your leg and seat. Keno is 100% sound, good to shoe and knows how to live on pasture with a herd. He does require a warmup before going to work on some days, so is not suited for an inexperienced rider, but he has a lot to offer for the right fit. Keno stands 14 hands and weighs approximately 980 lbs. on our livestock scale.

We're hiring for the upcoming season!
The Powderhorn Ranch/Diamond Land & Livestock is looking for qualified individuals to fill combined horsemanship/ranch hand positions for 2026-2027. Hirees will be assigned a string of horses to ride and train for our sales program, under the supervision and management of our senior staff. Areas of responsibility will also include feeding and barn chores, monitoring herd health and condition, teaching and handling horses from weanlings and unstarted 2-year-olds up to mature saddle horses, and assisting on the ranch with tasks such as fencing, cattle work, facilitating guest horseback activities, and additional duties as needed.

We thrive with individuals who desire to grow and learn, are hard-working and take personal responsibility for their work. Prior riding and horsemanship experience is required to apply. This salaried position will be at least one year long, with possibilities to stay on longer. We provide housing, ranch transportation, and a grounded, family-friendly work environment.
