Breakway Farm is heartbroken to share the passing of Calculator, who was humanely euthanized on August 21 due to a chronic foot condition.
Calculator was a precocious racehorse for trainer Peter Miller, remembered at two for finishing second to American Pharoah in both the 2014 Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Frontrunner Stakes (G1). Though sidelined from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and later the Triple Crown trail with a sore foot, he returned at three to break his maiden in commanding fashion, drawing off by 4 ¼ lengths in the Sham Stakes (G3).
The son of In Summation continued to prove his class against top company. As a four-year-old, he came within a head of Grade 1 glory when second to Salutos Amigos in the Carter Handicap and was just a length behind Catalina Red in the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2). At five, he again affirmed his talent with a runner-up finish in the Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2). Later in his career, he transitioned successfully to the turf, capturing the Clocker’s Corner Stakes at Santa Anita and placing third in the Daytona Stakes (G3).
A survivor of the devastating San Luis Rey Training Center fire in 2017, Calculator embodied resilience and courage throughout his life. His versatility on the racetrack, striking presence, and determined spirit earned him a loyal following that carried into his stud career.
Calculator stood five seasons at Breakway Farm and has two crops of racing age. He passed on his strength and quality to his offspring, many of whom bear his same commanding presence. His final crop will be born in 2026.
Our deepest condolences go out to Calculator’s many fans and admirers. He was truly special and will be profoundly missed by all of us at Breakway Farm.
