Be careful about sharing food with your pets! If you want to share a treat with them, stick to items such as plain green beans, pumpkin puree (not pie filling), or a small piece of turkey breast (no skin). Fatty foods such as butter, bacon, fatty meat drippings, gravies and meat scraps may seem harmless but can pose very real threats of pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas that can result in clinical signs of vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. Some breeds, such as miniature Schnauzers are very prone to developing pancreatitis but all dogs ingesting a large enough quantity of these foods are at risk. Symptoms may not be immediate and can occur up to 4 days after exposure.

🐎Important update for horse owners – Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1/EHM) Outbreak Precautions 🐎

There are active cases of EHV-1/EHM in Texas after several large equine events brought horses together from all over the country.

EHV-1 can spread quickly between horses and is spread through respiratory droplets, water sources, shared equipment and fomites such as human hands and clothing. We want our clients to be well informed about this disease and to reduce panic among horse owners by having facts and resources.

SYMPTOMS
1. Fever
2. Nasal discharge
3. Hind end weakness or wobbliness
4. Loss of tail tone
5. Urine dribbling
6. Some cases progress to EHM, the neurological form of EHV-1.

TRANSMISSION
1. Nose-to-nose contact
2. Aerosolized particles
3. Shared equipment (e.g. Water buckets, tack, grooming tools)
4. People (e.g. hands, clothing, boots)

To keep everyone safe, we are advising the following:

Temperature monitoring at home
1. Please take your horse’s temperature twice daily if your horse has been to any show or event in the last 14 days.
2. A re**al temperature of 101.5 F is a concern. Call us if you see a fever, nasal discharge, coughing or any stumbling/neurological signs.

If you have questions or concerns please contact one of our veterinarians.

We believe in the power of collaborative- care or the “Mayo Method” which prioritizes the needs of the patient through a team-based approach involving various specialists collaborating to deliver comprehensive care. Not only do our doctors discuss cases, we have a network of boarded specialists we routinely consult with. Together we are better.

Sharp edges known as enamel points will naturally develop over time as the horse’s teeth erupt. These sharp enamel points will often cause soreness, lacerations and ulcers to the sides of the cheeks and to the tongue. Often horses with sores from these sharp points will find it painful to chew and they will give up and spit out a half-chewed ball of hay. This is called quidding and is unfortunately a common occurrence. With routine dental treatments the points will not become sharp and the horse will not suffer these problems. The average 1,100 lb horse has about 300 liters of water in the body (over 79 gallons!). Most of this water is held in the cells in the body tissue and about 40 liters of this fluid is in circulation as blood. When sick and dehydrated, fluid therapy is often the most important treatment to save a horse’s life. We can hang up to 20 liters of fluid at a time for fluid replacement.

Our small animal surgical suite is modern and well equipped to help ensure our patients’ safety and comfort at every point in a procedure. Safe anesthesia and proper pain control are front and center. Our surgical suite is equipped with isoflurane gas anesthesia including the options of a non-rebreathing circuit and a ventilator. We monitor not only heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature, but also ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and use a capnograph to measure ETCO2 which ensures the patient is ventilating properly. We use a fluid pump to accurately set the rate for IV fluids. We have a syringe pump if additional medications are needed. To help keep our patients warm, we have heated surgery tables and an incubator to keep fluids warm. Of course, the most important aspect of surgical patient care is our amazing surgical team! Not only do we have a surgical team Monday through Friday, we have an on-call team that can handle emergency situations 24/7. You can read more about small animal surgery on our website at https://westdakotavet.com/small-animal-surgery.php

Thousands of horses colic each year in the United States. The vast majority of those colics will be mild cases that resolve with simple medical treatment. Approximately 5 to 10% of colicky horses end up needing to be referred to a surgical facility and possibly undergo surgery to correct the issue. The greatest factor in determining whether a horse undergoing colic surgery lives or dies is early recognition by the owner and early referral by the veterinarian to a full-service equine hospital with intensive care and surgery facilities. West Dakota Veterinary Clinic offers a full-service Equine Center complete with a surgical suite and ICU to better care for the horses in the region.
Shelley’s horse Woody is one of the beneficiaries of our amazing team of surgeons and technicians led by Dr. Erika Schumacher. Woody had colic surgery six years ago today and is still going strong!

November is the month we recognized senior pets ❤ As your pet gets older, their healthcare requirements will need to adapt to their new needs. Older pets may need to visit the vet more often than younger pets to check in on any chronic medical conditions, and to check for any new medical conditions that could arise.
