As many of you have heard, there has been an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in Texas. There has been a lot of misinformation and panic circulating this outbreak and we understand how scary it can be to read about it. We are hoping to help our horse clients further understand what this could mean for their horses.
🐴
Equine Herpesvirus is a very common virus in horses. There are two significant forms, 1 and 4. Both forms can cause respiratory disease, abortion, or neurological disease. EHV is spread through respiratory tract secretions (coughing, sneezing, etc). The virus can live on surfaces (buckets, feed pans, etc). Symptoms depend on the form that the horse is infected with. The respiratory form typically starts with a fever and progresses to coughing +/- nasal discharge; however the neurological form can be present with NO fever or respiratory signs. EHV-1 can sometimes induce Equine Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) which can lead to the neurological signs. There is no vaccine specifically for EHM and treatment involves aggressive supportive care.
🐴
More simply put, EHV is not a new virus and there have been multiple outbreaks over the years. The current outbreak has reached so much attention due to it developing into the neurological form. The respiratory form is also a reportable disease in most states (so make sure to read WHICH form has been reported). Most vaccines (including Prestige 5way + WNV) protect against the respiratory form of EHV. Large gatherings of horses from multiple areas are typically the source.
There have not been any reportable cases of EHV (in any form) in North Dakota to the best of our knowledge.
🐴
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your veterinarian, as they have the most knowledge in a situation such as this!
Other great resources include American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC).

It’s National Veterinary Technician week!!
🩺
You may notice our staff is largely made up of amazing technicians and assistants. Our veterinarians simply could not do their jobs without the hard work of our techs and assistants! They’re the ones restraining animals, getting medications ready, taking histories, monitoring anesthesia, recovering surgery patients, and so much more. The dedication of these ladies to our patients is unmatched.
We want to honor ALL veterinary technicians and assistants this week (and all the other weeks of the year)!

A second case of anthrax has been confirmed in Stark County.

“Producers in past known affected areas and counties should consult with their veterinarians to review their risk factors and vaccination needs. If producers have unusual losses on pasture, they should reach out to their local veterinarian as they are experienced and trained for this type of response.” The state veterinarian’s office will coordinate with local and state resources to assist producers in dealing with disease situations. https://www.ndda.nd.gov/news/second-case-anthrax-detected-stark-county

Summer has come and gone, and we’ve now entered the fall season! For our cattle producers, this means the busy has began with pre-conditioning calves, weaning, bringing cows home and preg checking.
Why get your cows preg checked??
Utilizing ultrasound, our veterinarians can detect open cows/heifers that don’t need to be fed all winter. Other information we can provide is estimated calving dates, determine what cycle the cattle conceived and even if the calf is a bull or heifer.
Preg checking is also a great time to administer any fall vaccinations and parasite control for your herd. It also provides an opportunity for the veterinarian to inspect each animal as they come through the chute for any health issues overall.
*Circle C Veterinary service provides a hydraulic chute and any product your program implements*
Call today with any questions, or to get on the schedule as we are booking up fast!
