The Fourth of July can be stressful for many pets because of fireworks, crowds, and changes in routine. A little preparation can make a big difference.
Here are some of the best ways to prepare:
* Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin. Even well-trained pets can panic and run away.
* Create a safe space with their bed, favorite toys, blankets, and fresh water. Close curtains or blinds to reduce flashes of light.
* Play background noise such as a TV, fan, or calming music to help mask fireworks.
* Exercise them early with a long walk or play session before celebrations start so they’re more relaxed later.
* Check ID tags and microchip information to make sure your contact information is current, just in case they escape.
* Keep doors and gates secure and remind guests to be careful when entering or leaving your home.
* Avoid bringing pets to fireworks shows. The loud noises and large crowds can be overwhelming.
* Watch the food. Keep barbecue foods, chocolate, onions, grapes, alcohol, corn cobs, and fireworks out of reach.
* Talk to your veterinarian ahead of time if your pet has severe anxiety. They may recommend medication or other strategies.
If you’re celebrating outdoors at home:
* Keep dogs on a leash if they need to go outside after dark.
* Make sure cats stay inside for the evening.
* Clean up spent fireworks promptly, as the residue can be harmful if pets chew on it.
With a little planning, you can enjoy the holiday while helping your furry family members stay safe and comfortable. Have a fun and safe Fourth of July! 🇺🇸🐾
