Friends of the Animal Shelter β Spay/Neuter Program
Friends of the Animal Shelter was formed in 2001 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to end euthanasia as a means of controlling animal overpopulation. To pursue that goal, FRIENDS started the No Cost Spay/Neuter Program where any pet owner in Hancock County can obtain a voucher to have their pet dog or cat fixed at no cost and receive a rabies shot. This program has been extremely successful in preventing pet overpopulation. During 2025, Friends of the Animal Shelter spent a total of $130,003 to provide No Cost Spay/Neuter and rabies vaccinations to 1,733 pets in Hancock County. FRIENDS has had a robust Spay/Neuter program going for the past 8 years and seen reductions in the number of animals admitted to Hancock Animal Shelter each year as a result of this program. Hancock Shelter has seen admissions drop from 1,846 in 2017 down to 1,033 in 2025 - a reduction of 44% since 2017. Positive trends like this are only possible with your support.
