HOW A SERIAL KITTEN KILLER RECEIVED A 54 MONTH SENTENCE AND SPENT ONE DAY IN PRISON

For nearly three years, Court Advocates showed up to every hearing in the Thomas Martel case.

On Monday, June 22, 2026, we believed a jury would finally hear the evidence.

That never happened.

According to prosecutors, Martel repeatedly acquired kittens through Craigslist, named every one of them Shelly, tortured and killed them, and then replaced them with similar-looking kittens.

Prosecutors alleged that Martel told his girlfriend he had enjoyed killing cats since he was 8 years old.

They alleged he videotaped some of the abuse.

They alleged one video was captioned:

"Just before I murdered her."

The victims were approximately 8 week old kittens.

Every one of them was named Shelly.

Martel was originally charged with 10 felonies.

Five counts of Animal Torture.

Five counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals.

Two felony charges for each kitten he was accused of torturing and killing.

After nearly three years of delays, continuances, and postponed trial dates, jury selection was scheduled to begin.

Then everything changed.

Judge Kanter asked about a plea offer that had been discussed during a 402 conference more than a year earlier with a DIFFERENT Judge - Shelley Sutker-Dermer.

The State informed the court that the offer had been revoked.

Judge Kanter stated she would honor it anyway.

Before a single juror was selected, Martel accepted the deal.

Eight of the ten felony charges were dismissed.

Martel pleaded guilty to torturing and killing one kitten named Shelly.

Only one Shelly remained in the plea agreement.

The others disappeared into dismissed charges.

Martel received a sentence of 54 months.

That may sound substantial.

But here is what happened next.

Martel received credit for 1,079 days spent on electronic monitoring while living at home with his parents in Northbrook.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections:

Martel was admitted to IDOC on June 23, 2026.

Martel was paroled on June 23, 2026.

THE SAME DAY!!!!!!

His projected discharge date is December 23, 2026. JUST 6 MONTHS ON PAROLE!

No jury ever heard the evidence.

No jury ever rendered a verdict.

No jury ever learned about the other victims.

Five kittens entered this courtroom.

Only one Shelly received justice.

The others disappeared into a plea agreement.

A 54 month sentence.

One day in prison.

You decide whether justice was served.

Remember the Shellys.

They mattered.
