I pulled the tarps off this plot today and I’m happy with what I see. The w**ds have been fried out and the soil looks nice. The beds are still pretty wet, so hopefully they can dry out enough these next few days so I can get cover crops planted.

The tarps were on the beds for roughly 3 weeks. They help to smother/fry w**ds and are a great tool for passive w**d control!

I love it when a crop tells a story and this garlic is a perfect example…

In July, my husband, Eric ( )purchased a home to renovate, and the previous owner was an avid gardener.

One day we were wandering her property and found her garlic patch that she planted last fall. We harvested and cured the garlic. Rather than eating it, will are going to save the good seed to replant in our garden.

The goal is to continue to keep the memory and legacy of Mary (the homeowner) alive through her garlic crop!

Bulk cover crop seeds are arriving!

My new home garden plot has heavy clay soil, so I’m working to amend the soil with the use of compost and cover crops.

As soon as the beds were made, I planted a round of buckwheat because it does well in the hot summer heat. I recently w**d-whacked (terminated) the buckwheat, and in a few weeks I’ll plant the next round of seeds.

The late summer planting will be a mix of field peas, oats, teff, and tillage radish. The goal is to help add more organic matter to our soil and decrease compaction. These cover crops will also help with w**d management and bed erosion.

I was hopeful to grow a bountiful garden this fall, but because the soil is not ideal, I decided to take some time to nourish it and make it better for next season. I realize it will take time to get the soil composition where I want it to be, but these steps will help get us on the right path!

If you have experience with clay soils, let me know what recommendations you may have. Happy growing!

I had a beautiful drive through the Iowa countryside to pick up a load of salad dressings this morning. Our copacker is and they are based in Indianola, IA. Their facility is nestled amongst cornfields and off a gravel road / it’s a very Iowa vibe!

Many of our grocer shelves should be stocked with this new batch of healthy salad dressings.

If you read my newsletter this week, you learned about the property my husband ( ) just purchased to renovate. The homeowner loved to garden, and we have been transplanting carloads of her plants at our new home.

Her yard was full of hostas, phlox, echinacea, rudbeckia, and other great perennials. I’m excited to honor her love for gardening with her plants at our home.

Also - this is just one (of the many reasons) why my van is always dirty!

Friendly reminder to get out and scout your plants! The farmers feet is one of the best forms of plant management. Walk around and observe your plants. Look for pests and disease issues. The sooner you spot them the sooner you can fix any issues that may occur.

Our rental agreement with & comes to an end this week. We have been growing/nurturing seeds for their farmers since mid February and now this plants are in the farmers soil!

A big thank you to everyone who helped to make this partnership possible. I also want to thank our DUG customers for supporting both of these non profit organizations. Attending their plant sale, joining their CSA, shopping at their farmers market, charitable donations, etc are all ways you have helped these organizations!

Cultivating Community through urban farming

Dogpatch Urban Gardens (D.U.G.) is a small-scale market garden growing produce naturally with organic principles, and sustainable methods, on ¼ an acre of land. We never use any form of synthetic chemicals on the plot including artificial pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. WHO WE ARE – A family run farm passionate about health, community, education, and the environment. WHAT WE DO – Cultivate fresh, nutritious, and flavorful produce in the Northern Beaverdale area. HOW WE DO IT – Use sustainable, organic, and biointensive farm methods to produce high yields on a minimal amount of land while maintaining the integrity of the environment. WHAT WE VALUE · Health/Nutrition · Building community · Environmental Conservation · Education · Family Values – hard work, resilience, commitment, dependability · Organic principles (No use of synthetic chemicals) · Enhancing soil quality · Professionalism The farm is built on a foundation which the successful market gardener, Jean Martin Fortier states the best, “Grow better, not bigger.” Small-scale farming has its advantages because it allows for me to “know my crops.” Since the land is small I am constantly interacting with every square foot of the crops and I can recognize any potential issues involving the soil, pests, w**ds, etc. Growing on a smaller scale also allows me to focus on creating high quality and fresh produce. I am able to harvest within just days of distribution! Imagine a farm that not only provides you and your family with healthy, delicious, and local food but a farm that does all this while positively interacting with the environment. Hopefully the visual you created in your mind is that of Dogpatch Urban Gardens. I can’t wait to grow for you and with you!
