UPDATE: Thanks to your overwhelming support we are all set on towels for the foreseeable future!

Can you help? 🙏 First of all, we are incredibly grateful to have a large volume of animals safe in our care right now. We want to apologize since all the traffic to view our adoptable animals has caused delays for some folks. We're working to alleviate the issue... but in the meantime, we have a Dog Pavilion filled to the brim with puppies and dogs who would love the opportunity to meet you in person. We hope you'll come by.

While you visit, would you be able to help us restock our linens shelf? With so many animals in our care, we're flying through towels and blankets! These items are so important, as they help us provide comfort to homeless animals like Cody, pictured here. Our largest need is towels (all sizes), followed by blankets. Please no pillowcases, fitted sheets, or blankets with embellishments.

If you'd be so kind to check your closets before coming by over the next few days, we'd be really appreciative. Donations can be dropped off outside our garage door in our donation bin. Can't make it over but still want to help the animals? Here's our current Wish List: tinyurl.com/3zjnyxxy

We are located at 104 Portsmouth Avenue in Stratham, NH. Donations can be dropped off any day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Our Adoption Center is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day except Wednesdays (closed).

As always, thank you for your support (and patience). We hope to see you soon! ♥️

DID YOU KNOW?

Strangles was one of the first equine diseases to be described by the early writers of veterinary science (was first reported in 1215) and is one of the most commonly diagnosed contagious diseases of the horse, worldwide. Though strangles is highly contagious and can affect many horses on a farm, particularly young animals, most horses with infection recover without complication.

It is not uncommon for strangles infections to recur on a farm with previous outbreaks of the disease. The bacteria can survive in water sources for over a month, but the primary source of recurrent infections is most likely asymptomatic carrier horses. Anywhere from 4-50% of the horses on farms with recurring strangles are asymptomatic carriers of the infection, and they may continue to shed the bacteria for months to even years, serving as a continual source of new infections.

If you suspect a strangles outbreak, be sure to involve your veterinarian right away to determine the diagnosis and the best control practices for your particular farm. Strangles is a reportable disease in some states. Movement of any horses on or off the farm should be stopped, and new horses should not be introduced. Monitoring the temperature of all horses daily and isolating horses at the first sign of fever is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of infection. Infected horses can transmit the bacteria to healthy horses one to two days after they develop a fever.

As always, your veterinarian remains your best source of information and advice!

Not my content but re-posting with permission:

“This was posted locally Some insight on the current horse boarding market, and why you may feel you are being priced out.

While everyone keeps seeking to board their beloved horse at a top tier Facility, with 24/7 hay, extended “all day” turnout, night check, feed 3x per day, well maintained facility and a trainer on site or the ability to bring your own.

Here are some Averages.

Shavings cost. $7.00- 7.50 per bag/ day=
Or $2575-$3000 per semi bulk

Hay $7.00-8.50 per small bale (40 #)
$125-165 per large square (700 #)
$85-100 per round (800 #)

Stall cleaning $5.00 -$7.00 per stall/day
Manure removal- haul off $1200 per month for 24 horse facility

Grain $24-per 40 # bag at a feed rate of 6 # per day per horse just over 4.2 bags per month $100.80 plus tax & delivery
$115 per horse/month

Labor $15-25 per hour 40 hours/week
$600-1000 PER employee/week (x2 + for very large facilities) **some employees receive board in exchange for extra hours of work.

Stall cost bare $250-350 (lease or what owners should charge per box to cover use & maintenance of said box)

Utilities vary greatly
Water, fuel, heat/gas, electric, etc.
$800-1600/month

Fence posts $26 ea
Fence boards 16’ $29 ea
Water buckets $15 ea
Feed bins $30 ea

Some go what is not factored in:
•Equipment purchase & maintenance
•Storage buildings for hay & equipment to keep fluffy safe from fire risk
•mortgage & taxes
•Farm owner time & experience
•farm owners Significant Other doing maintenance & repairs to keep costs down
•footing maintenance & refreshing

So the facility that y’all are Seeking needs to be charging a minimum of $1215 per month to break even on hay (30 # per day- more if really being fed 24-7 free choice,) grain, shavings (one bag a day) labor (single employee,) utilities and the rent on the “box.”

These figures do not include insurance, maintenance materials, improvements (like footing, lighting upgrades, fans etc) owner experience, wound treatment prior to your arrival, blanketing, etc.

So IF you are paying less than $1200 per month for top quality care and a facility to match- You are NOT paying enough.”
