MARK & PAY: WHAT IT IS AND HOW WE USE IT IN DOG TRAINING

One of the most effective communication tools in dog training is the Mark and Pay system.

So what does that mean?

MARK = The exact moment your dog does the behavior you want.
This can be:
• A verbal marker like “Yes”
• A clicker
• Another consistent marker word or sound

The marker tells the dog:
“That right there… that’s what I wanted.”

PAY = The reward that follows the marker.
This could be:
• Food
• Ball or tug reward
• Praise
• Access to something the dog wants

The payment reinforces the behavior, making the dog more likely to repeat it.

Example:
You ask for a sit.
Dog’s rear hits the ground.
You immediately say “YES!” (mark)
Then reward with food, toy, or engagement (pay)

Timing matters.
If your timing is late, you may accidentally reward the wrong behavior.

How we implement it in training:

1. Start with simple behaviors your dog can succeed with
2. Mark the exact behavior you want
3. Pay immediately and consistently
4. Repeat until the dog clearly understands the behavior earns reinforcement
5. Gradually add distractions, duration, and difficulty

Why it works:
Dogs learn through clarity and consistency. The mark creates precision. The pay builds value.
