Potential owner: How much is the puppy?
Breeder : $$$
Potential owner: What?! Way too expensive to go!!
Breeder: What do you think would be a good price?
Potential owner: No more than $500. You breeders are so overrated!
Breeder: I'm sorry you see it this way. Why don't you try it yourself?
Owner: Perfect, thank you!
Breeder: To start, you will need a female (average minimum cost $3000 and up), also males (average minimum price $3000 and up) or s***m (average $1000 and up, plus surgical insemination of $1250). You will have to present them to shows to show they are standard breed (minimum of $5,000 total travel and tax). You'll need to do their genetic and health checks (average of $1050 per dog, per year). You must raise them and provide daily care, feeding and maintenance for two years (so a minimum of $200 per month).
Potential owner: But I don't have that much money..
Breeder: For $1500 you can foster a puppy for me and then keep one of the puppies. Apparently you have to pay birth and care too.
Potential home owner: I can do this!
Breeder: Okay, so I have a female who is due in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 for at least 8 weeks to assist with delivery and care. You may need to feed puppies with a probe or bottle every 2-3 hours if the mother does not breastfeed in the first few days. Did I mention how much they p**p?
Potential owner: 8 weeks ?? This is too much for me! I need to get to work.
Breeder: Also need a reproductive vet to do x-rays ($200-400), possibly progesterone test ($100-$200) and C-section ($2000) and initial vet care for the little ones as they grow. Puppy vet and two sets of vaccines ($250 or more depending on how many puppies there are in the litter). Have at hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, disinfectant, absorbent wipes, scissors, heating pad, birth bed, blankets, cleaning products, suitable food with supplements for mother, adapted milk, medicines and hand supplies and in case of emergency...
Potential owner: But I don’t have all these things..
Breeder: $1000 will buy them.
Potential home owner: mmm.. You know, I think it's better to just buy a puppy.
Breeder: The right decision! For us breeders, there are no vacations or holidays. While you are visiting with your family and friends, we are at home to our dogs and taking care of them. This is a commitment without a break. THIS IS THE REALITY. When choosing a professional you do not only pay for the puppy, but also knowledge, experience, love, time, sacrifices, etc.
