Pain doesn’t always look like pain. 🐾

A dog may hesitate before jumping on the couch. A cat may play less, groom differently, or quietly withdraw. Another may approach the food bowl but struggle to eat. These subtle changes can be easy to dismiss, but they may signal painful conditions such as osteoarthritis or feline chronic gingivostomatitis.

This Itchy Pet Awareness Month, let’s look beyond the scratch. 🔎

Persistent itching can signal more than temporary irritation. For many dogs, environmental allergens can trigger an immune overreaction known as canine atopic dermatitis—one of the most common causes of chronic itch in veterinary dermatology.

Researchers are investigating whether the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity of mesenchymal stromal cells could help bring that immune response back into balance.

Because itch is rarely just itch—and advancing care starts with understanding what drives it.

In the next installment of our Canine Osteoarthritis Educational Series, Rebecca Windsor, DVM, DACVIM, explores developmental OA and why early recognition matters:

🦴 OA can begin during growth as a result of developmental orthopedic disease.

⏳ There is a “golden window” early in life when recognition and intervention may help change the trajectory of joint disease.

👀 The signs can be subtle—intermittent limping, skipping, unusual sitting or lying positions, stiffness after exercise, or simply “always moving that way.”

🐕 Young and active doesn’t always mean healthy joints.

🎯 The goal: identify risk early, protect the joint, and preserve lifelong mobility.

As science evolves, so does our understanding of where stem cells go and what they do.

In our latest Science Library article, Rebecca Windsor, DVM, DACVIM, explores what we’ve learned about the pulmonary first-pass effect and what happens when intravenously administered mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) initially localize in the lungs:

🫁 Pulmonary retention of IV MSCs is a carefully orchestrated process, playing an important role in their systemic immunomodulatory effects.

Lung-retained MSCs remain biologically active, releasing factors that helps regulate inflammation throughout the body.

Retention is temporary, some cells later redistribute to sites of injury or disease.

Even MSC death is part of the therapeutic process. After treatment, many MSCs naturally undergo apoptosis and are cleared by macrophages. This interaction can help shift macrophages toward a more anti-inflammatory state, meaning the effects of MSCs extend beyond the lifespan of the cells themselves.

💡 The key takeaway: MSC localization in the lungs is not a barrier; it is an important part of how MSCs drive systemic immunomodulation.

Cats don't limp. They simply do less.

Unlike dogs, most cats with osteoarthritis don't develop an obvious lameness. Instead, they stop jumping onto the couch, avoid stairs, groom less, sleep more, or simply become "less like themselves." Because feline OA is usually bilateral and affects multiple joints, there isn't a "good leg" to compensate, and because cats instinctively hide weakness, pain often goes unnoticed.

The result? Osteoarthritis is one of the most common diseases in older cats and also one of the most underdiagnosed, affecting more than half of cats over six years of age and approximately 90% of geriatric cats.

In our latest Feline Osteoarthritis Educational Series installment, Dr. Rebecca Windsor, DVM, DACVIM, explores why diagnosing OA in cats is fundamentally different from diagnosing OA in dogs, including:
