The happy beagle on the right is Winston, and he wasn't always this confident. When I photographed him four years ago, he barely left his person's side.

Since then, his family adopted another rescue beagle, Lizzie, and she's changed his world. Winston is more playful and has even lost weight from running around the yard with his new friend.

One of my favorite things about photographing repeat clients is getting to see stories like this unfold over the years.

Facebook reminded me of this photo of Sammy and me at Cascade Falls in Ouray from 2010.

Sammy and I had a bond unlike any I've had with another dog, and he's a big part of why I ended up in pet photography. He joined our family when he was three years old, and I'd adopt an adult dog again in a heartbeat. Iā€™m not sure I could handle the yellow Lab fur again, though. Sam's fur is still permanently embedded on my old black fleece.

It's National Rescue Dog Day! Big dogs donā€™t always get the spotlight when people think about rescue stories, but they absolutely should.

Brody the Shepherd/Husky was only four months old when his family started fostering him. He had been hit by a car and had two broken hips. They rehabbed him after surgery and there was no way they were letting him go. As you can see, he can run with the best of them now!

Iā€™ve photographed so many incredible rescue dogs over the years, each one with their own story and the families who couldnā€™t imagine life without them now.

These two cats had absolutely no interest in posing together, which is pretty typical cat behavior.

So instead of forcing it, I photographed Alley and Cougar separately and designed the album cover with two cameo windows so they could still be featured together.

A simple solution to feature both beautiful cats.

A few weeks ago, a friend suggested that a Corgi might be a great breed for me, but I said no because I didnā€™t think they could keep up on trails.

Shortly afterward, I photographed Ruby. Her legs say Corgi, but the rest of her is Blue Heeler. I clearly underestimated her short, little power legs. She scampered straight up the rocks, proving me wrong. She would absolutely keep up with me on a hike and probably run laps around me.

Ruby came from Dumb Friends League in 2020 (Humane Colorado now), and her family really hit the jackpot with this sweet girl. Now, if I could just clone her.

Itā€™s Mr. Butterā€™s birthday and his two-year adoption anniversary. Double the reason to celebrate!

How did I get him to look at the cake? I put a cat treat on the plate. He gobbled it, then started checking the cake to see if there was anything else worth his time.

Iā€™ll share a behind-the-scenes video because this was actually easier to capture than you might think.

In case youā€™re curious, no, he didnā€™t eat the cake. He has no interest in sugar, which is honestly a blessing because he likes everything else.
