Continuing with our Top 5 Life Skills for Multi-dog Households!
This week we cover Door Manners! 🚪
Doorways are very commonly the catalyst for a lot of big feelings in dogs. It's the threshold to the outside world, it's where you come in with new smells and new stuff, and it's where their excitement can get a little cramped! In multi-dog households doorways can unforuntaely be the site of a lot scuffles too.
🌟Pro Tip! Always work with one dog at a time at first. Before working on the front door, which is REALLY hard, start with something a little more digestible. A door going from the backyard into the house, going from the laundry room to a hallway, or a babygate near the livingroom are all more neutral thresholds to practice on.
Step 1. Ask your dog for a stationary behavior. This can be a sit or a down. Begin with easy tests. Practice merely turning towards the door. Reaching for the door. Touching the door k**b. Turning your back on them. If they are staying back, reward them in place.
Step 2. Reinforce staying AWAY from the door. After your dog can demonstrate staying away from the door when you interact with it, release them and send rewards back to them or behind them. Allow them to chase food AWAY from the door.
3. Start making your interactions with the door more challenging. See if they can stay back while the door remains cracked open. Leave it open more and more. Can you poke your head out? Can you take one or two steps outside. Release and reward them AWAY from the door.
4. Make sure your single dog can handle you coming and going through a doorway. Make sure they are reliably only passing through when you call them. Practice with each of your dogs one on one.
When introducing an additional dog, practice from the step 1 all over again. Keep your tests short and sweet.
Step 5. Call your first dog through. Toss rewards back at the dog staying behind. Rinse and repeat!
⛔️⚠️ When throwing food for multiple dogs only do this if your dogs are not at risk of resource guarding as they look for thrown food. If this is the case, take the time to return to them and hand deliver food to each dog. And if you need help with this, please reach out to a RAD trainer who can support you and your pups!
