Say hi to Arya! A seven month old golden retriever puppy. She arrived home a couple weeks ago with some emotional baggage around the crate. Her owner described it as sheer panic involving thrashing, crying for over an hour incessantly, and never lying down.

Luckily her owner has had a lot of coaching on breaking things down and how to introduce the crate like it’s brand new. She has been feeding her in there, throwing tons of treats and toys in there, and generally trying to use it as little as possible when it’s doable. All of this is making a big difference already, as you can tell she has made the connection between being in the crate and the arrival of tasty things.

For this first session I wanted to just assess and determine where we could keep going. A seven month old with no training history meant a dog with no other tools - so I wanted to show her additional things she could do that result in more lovely things happening. Then put all of that together with the crate.

In one session we introduced luring and cookie magnets, a lured sit, and a lured down. Does she know all of these things now? No way 🤣 it’s just the first session. But she did a really super good job and impressed me and her mom!

Continuing with our Top 5 Life Skills for Multi-dog Households!

This week we cover Door Manners! 🚪

Doorways are very commonly the catalyst for a lot of big feelings in dogs. It's the threshold to the outside world, it's where you come in with new smells and new stuff, and it's where their excitement can get a little cramped! In multi-dog households doorways can unforuntaely be the site of a lot scuffles too.

🌟Pro Tip! Always work with one dog at a time at first. Before working on the front door, which is REALLY hard, start with something a little more digestible. A door going from the backyard into the house, going from the laundry room to a hallway, or a babygate near the livingroom are all more neutral thresholds to practice on.

Step 1. Ask your dog for a stationary behavior. This can be a sit or a down. Begin with easy tests. Practice merely turning towards the door. Reaching for the door. Touching the door k**b. Turning your back on them. If they are staying back, reward them in place.

Step 2. Reinforce staying AWAY from the door. After your dog can demonstrate staying away from the door when you interact with it, release them and send rewards back to them or behind them. Allow them to chase food AWAY from the door.

3. Start making your interactions with the door more challenging. See if they can stay back while the door remains cracked open. Leave it open more and more. Can you poke your head out? Can you take one or two steps outside. Release and reward them AWAY from the door.

4. Make sure your single dog can handle you coming and going through a doorway. Make sure they are reliably only passing through when you call them. Practice with each of your dogs one on one.

When introducing an additional dog, practice from the step 1 all over again. Keep your tests short and sweet.

Step 5. Call your first dog through. Toss rewards back at the dog staying behind. Rinse and repeat!

⛔️⚠️ When throwing food for multiple dogs only do this if your dogs are not at risk of resource guarding as they look for thrown food. If this is the case, take the time to return to them and hand deliver food to each dog. And if you need help with this, please reach out to a RAD trainer who can support you and your pups!

🐶🐶🐶 Top 5 Multi-dog Household Skills:

Number 1: Name Recognition

Step 1: Working with single dog, start building a pattern of orienting to you by playing the Up/Down game. Place a cookie on the ground in front of you, allow them to eat it, capture the moment they return attention to you by saying “yes” or using a clicker. Immediately place food on the ground in front of you again. Continue this pattern.

Step 2: Toss a treat a short distance away from you so that they are no longer oriented to you. After they chase and eat the food, mark the moment they return to you, and place food on the ground or feed to the mouth. Toss another reset cookie to start the pattern over again.

Step 3: Introduce your own movement now. Drop a few treats in place and YOU walk away from the dog. Either behind them or to the side. Act like your treats are a little smoke bomb! Mark and reinforce when they turn to follow you.

Step 4: The first three steps were building a pattern of reorienting to you and offering focus. Now we will attach the “cue” to the behavior while playing the same patterns. The “cue” will be their name!

Working around other dogs: Start with just one additional dog. Say one dog’s name and deliver a cookie to them. After feeding the first dog, feed the second dog. This reinforces the other dog for NOT jumping the line. It reinforces their choice to NOT move into you.

⛔️⚠️ It is absolutely ok to utilize a barrier between the dogs if you need to. Particularly if you have a silly puppy or a dog that has any sort of resource guarding history.

Remember, work each dog on their own to refine their individual tool kit before plopping them all together! More dogs = more difficult usually 😆 so take your time!

In our Life Skills: Level One class we focus on the foundations. In class this week, one of the things our students worked on was "touch" - teaching your dog to press their nose into the palm of your hand. We use this for so many things, such as:

🐾 Leashing up our dogs easily
🐾 Completing a recall
🐾 Warming up for training sessions
🐾 Mental check ins
🐾 Fitness exercises
🐾 Tricks foundations
🐾 Directing through tough spaces
🐾 Loose leash walking
🐾 Grooming
🐾 And more!

We like to build this through a loop - sending them away and bringing them back in. In this video, trainer Macy is demonstrating for the class what that looks like.
