I made the call for Annie. It was like the flip of a switch. Her levels were improving, but something changed for her. She just stopped trying.
I’m not someone who believes in forcing them to keep going just because we aren’t ready to let go. Loving animals means listening when they tell you they’re tired, even when it breaks your heart. I refused to prolong any suffering for my own sake. The vets supported my decision and said we gave her the best possible chance.
Doing this kind of work in this day and age is hard. Not only do I have to regulate my own emotions and make decisions for the animals depending on me, but I do it with an audience. I do it knowing people will say, “You should have tried this.”
Thank you to Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital. They were incredible, and I truly appreciate everything they did for Annie. And thank you to everyone who donated, prayed, checked in, and loved her alongside us. I’m sorry I don’t have better news to give you.
Kannon understood exactly what we were needing to do when we went to say goodbye to Annie. He gave her some hay and a hug. I love you so much little buddy. Thank you for being Annie’s friend. Momma is so proud of you.
Annie, you were so deeply loved and you always will be.
