On this day in 1923, an artist was born–one who would make his mark on the equestrian world despite not being an equestrian himself. His name is synonymous for a particular depiction of fat hairy ponies, today seen on mugs and bedsheets and t-shirts around the globe. The genesis of this brand came 30 years after his birth, when he drew his first pony cartoon for the British magazine Punch.
β€œThe response was instantaneous,” Norman Thelwell wrote in his autobiography Wrestling with a Pencil (Methuen, 1986). β€œSuddenly I had fan mail…I dreamed up some more horsey ideas, and people went into raptures.”
Thelwell’s β€œpony cartoons” took off, resulting in now classic books known throughout world, including Angels on Horseback, A Leg at Each Corner, Thelwell’s Riding Academy, Gymkhana, Thelwell Goes West, Penelope, and Penelope Rides Again, all of which are available as reissued collections from Trafalgar Square Books. Thelwell’s recognition of a certain β€œcrazy” that went along with horses quickly gained him fans who appreciated the invitation to laugh at themselves (and the source of their obsession).
β€œI had a hardcover version of Penelope with a well-worn dust jacket,” remembers TSB Managing Director Martha Cook. β€œIt saw hard use doing the years of angst waiting for a horse of my very own.”

This very week of Grand National:

πŸ”΄ DID YOU KNOW THE US GOVERNMENT SET ASIDE A WEEK TO HONOR THE MORGAN HORSE?! πŸ”΄

On this date in 1989 the U.S. Senate introduced a resolution to recognize the Bicentennial of the American Morgan Horse and to designate the period commencing October 9, 1989 and ending October 15, 1989 as "National Morgan Horse Week". The resolution read as follows:
SRES 191 ES
S. Res. 191
In the Senate of the United States,
October 5 (legislative day, September 18), 1989.
Whereas the American Morgan Horse is the only horse perpetuated as a breed by the United States Government at a Government breeding farm for use by the military;
Whereas the American Morgan Horse served in every major American war from the 1800's through the 1940's and should be recognized for its contribution to America like any other war hero;
Whereas the American Morgan Horse served as this country's early American work horse, clearing the land, plowing the fields, and settling the West;
Whereas the American Morgan Horse is the progenitor of America's light horse breeds and was used to contribute to the development of the American Saddlebred horse, the Standardbred, and the American Quarterhorse;
Whereas the American Morgan Horse continues to serve the people of this country in a variety of ways including farming, cattle ranching and recreation;
Whereas the American Morgan Horse provides entertainment and sport to Americans in all 50 States as well as foreign countries by means of trail and endurance rides, carriage driving, showing, dressage, western riding, hunter/jumpers and serving the handicapped riding programs:
Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the period commencing October 9, 1989, and ending October 15, 1989, is designated as `National Morgan Horse Week', and the President is requested to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe such period with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In Memoriam,

Sleipnir Zenith, our handsome bright bay stallion moved over the Rainbow Bridge on Friday, 3 23 2018.

He was the last stallion son of B-L Rhinestone Kid, our deceased foundation sire, and out of our lovely mare, Hip Heath Zanna, also deceased.

We raised him as an orphan, and he was a favorite of visitors. Always a gentleman, and a lover of carrots.

He will be greatly missed.

So close, but yet so far...

Wish we could go to the American Morgan Horse Association convention in KY.

But we are just back from weeks in Washington State, and have so much to do at home.

Looking forward to more photos and postings.
