How to help make this a Happy & Safe holiday for your dog....
1. Do Not take your dog to the fireworks. Remember their hearing is much more sensitive than yours & these unexpected sounds can be scary & uncomfortable for them.
2. Always carry really yummy treats so you're prepared to treat any time your dog hears a boom. "BOOM means I get a treat." = Booms aren't so bad because they make good things happen.
3. Do not let your dog outside unattended. A terrified dog can do amazing things to flee when they feel their life is in danger & may escape that fenced in yard. Go out with your dog & have treats on hand to give if they hear a boom. Make sure to take them out before dusk so there's less chance of fireworks happening while they're trying to relieve themselves.
4. In the house, have TV or music, fans, etc to provide some noise to help minimize the booms.
5. Manage your emotions. Why? Because your dog is reading you. If you are stressed/worried about your dog it can make your dog anxious even before the first Boom. Try to make this a happy, fun time with your dog. Play with your dog, toss toys, play tug (yes, gentle game of tug gives dogs an opportunity to release some of their anxiety through chomping & pulling on tug toy), laugh & be happy. If you're having fun, your dog has to reaccess their emotions when booms start.
6. This is a great time to gift your dog with a new toy or chew bone. New items tend to be more interesting. Chewing or licking are behaviors that are calming to dogs so giving them something appropriate to chew can be helpful.
7. Some dogs have already learned very strong negative associations with fireworks & the Boom = treat won't work when they're over threshold & in fear of their own safety. If this is your dog & you live near a fireworks dislay then I suggest maybe go for a drive with dog, treats, a bone and find a nice country road away from town where there's distance between you & the extremely loud Booms. Usually you can see the fireworks without all the noise. At this point your dog should be under threshold & able to take treats every time you hear a boom in the distance.
