Today was check in day with our vet. The final verdict for Briella Mae is heart disease since she is responding very well to the heart med. It's extremely difficult to determine heart disease vs pneumonia even on x ray sometimes. The symptoms are almost identical. A couple small difference that I have noticed over the years, and this may just be anecdotal, is that when its heart disease, there isn't much if a change in their appetite (but even with eating well, there is typically weighloss) and they are less active but not completely lethargic. Pneumonia seems to really hit their systems hard. They typically have little to no appetite and are pretty lethargic to the point of not even standing up. The labored breathing definitely looks the same in both cases though.

We are still going back and forth on the age of Butterfly. I didnt realize that Dr. Ford had noted some arthritis in her hind end until I double checked today. But, I have also seen extremely young mama piggies who wind up with pregnancy/labor related injuries that have also had arthritis. For example, May 2024 we took Danica in with her newborn babies. She had a labor related injury that affected her pelvis and leg (which did clear up over time). She was a maximum of 5 months old and already had arthritis and we know this because she grew into a very large piggie. She's a moose now lol.
So we are on the fence about actual age for Butterfly but have agreed to offer her some recovery food since she has not been eating great since givong birth. She will get a few hours a day in the herd so she can socialize ( incase she is depressed) and exercise a bit to strengthen her hips. But she will also have time in the hospital cage to watch her eating habits, monitor her drinking which is still pretty excessive and watch out for the sludge turning into a stone.

I really hope this post gets seen. Petco ia having a HUGE online s a l e. We absolutely could use beds and tunnels. The egg shaped hidey are very popular in this house. Hero particularly loves them!

I did a thing. A kind of impulsive thing.

Last week I started putting feelers out for a friend for Zelda, preferably senior, hospice or special needs. I had to temporarily hold off on making a decision on who would be the best fit for her when the preemie piggies came in immediately followed by Niko's Vestibular episode (he's doing much better now but getting him to eat is tricky).
Monday night Zelda was just so mad and depressed so I knew I had to move more quickly than I had hoped. Moments later, a video from the NHSPCA popped up in my feed featuring the small animals they have available and I saw this bunny for half a second and I felt that click. The same click I felt when I met Niko, saw a photo of Phoebe, Kensington and Bonsai.
And then I saw her name was Toad and I was like yes, I have to meet her.

My original plan was to bring Zelda to NHSPCA today and do a meet and greet but when I was at the doctor's office yesterday, I realized how close I was to the shelter and popped over to meet her. Annnnd I loved her and brought her home.
Even though Toad's inital reaction to meeting Zelda between the x pen was to box at her, Zelda was thrilled to just have another bun in the house. And once Toad's stress levels dropped from the car ride, she has been going nose to nose with Zelda without any issues. She is also quite taken with Bonsai and doesn't even flinch with Niko randomly barks.

She looks like she is trying to be a velveteen lop but not quite there lol! Velveteen lops are one of my favorites. They are the perfect combo of sweet and sass.

There may still be a special needs bunny in my future. During the decision making process someone from a shelter reached out to the rescue page about this lovely neuro head tilter bunny that I agreed to take if it was approved from the shelter. There is a lot of red tape to go through with this particular place but if it goes through, I'll have a wonky male Rex as well. I haven't had a trio on a long time but bunny trios are amazing.

Anyway, People meet Toad, Toad meet the People.

I had attempted to schedule a post for this morning but selected pm instead of am. Whoops! Today is a busy day of cleaning cages and swapping some piggies around. I have a couple of ideas for bonding some extra stubborn boys

Anyway, for now, here is list of bunny rules. This applies to Shiba Inus 🙄🙄😆😆😵‍💫😵‍💫

I dont know how on earth it's 11:15pm already. I don't know where the day went. Im still trying to take bites of my dinner. I went to MB to get veggies later than usual today. They did not have Zelda's favorite salad in stock. If you don't hear from tomorrow, she probably got me in my sleep 😆😆

She's already extremely annoyed at me because I've been slowly cutting down how much she eats pellet and veggie wise. When Alice was alive, I had to overfeed a bit to keep Alice's weight up. CHF causes some pretty drastic weightloss. Alice would not eat unless Zelda was with her so in turn, Zelda overate as well. I knew it was very temporary so I wasn't overly concerned about it but now I am no longer her favorite person 😆😆

Between the sanctuary cats and my personal cats I cant do anything that involves small pieces at my house. Which is a shame because I love jigsaw puzzles and diamond dots.
They are not light on their feet, they are not graceful. In fact, last night, Leo was trying to walk around me on the couch, knocked my tumbler over and now I have a fat lip. 😆😆🙄🙄

Dragonfly and Ladybug were part of the Monmouth NJ hoarding situation. Thankfully they were in significantly better shape than the boys so we were able to delay their exams a bit. They had a general exam and confirmed their respective arthritis. Dragonfly is very arthritic in her knees and Ladybig in her hips. At this point I feel like an expert at visually finding arthritis, even with just a glance. Right now we are at 24 critters who are permanently on pain meds, 1 hopefully temporarily on pain meds, and 2 (maybe 3 depending on how things go with Briella Mae) on heart meds. I won't lie though, the critters are all pretty good about taking their meds so med distribution time isnt the hardest part of my day.

Briella Mae came to us a little over a year ago. She's an older lady so of course she was welcome to stay. She is very social with me and is usually one of the first pigs to run up to the side of the cage to say hello when I walk into the room. Last night was no different. And I do a lot of my hands on work after midnight so there wasn't even a lot of time between her being fine and her being not fine.
When I greeted the pigs when I woke up, Briella Mae was not at the front of the cage. Hmm. Weird. I located her kinda just hanging back with slightly different breathing and when I picked her up, her foot was slightly swollen with the start of bumblefoot. I do not love that combination, because bumblefoot can actually be secondary to heart disease. It's not always due to husbandry or wire bottom cages. Its also extremely difficult to manage when its due to heart disease. The poor circulation makes it difficult to completely heal so it can become a life long management situation.
So I packed her up, tossed her in the car with the others seeing the vet today and called the office en route to fill them in.
We did x rays and its kind of a toss up between an enlarged heart and pneumonia. We initially agreed heart but after I left, Dr. Ford started looking up a variety of chest x rays and he said he did see some commonalities between her x ray and some others that had pneumonia. I'm personally leaning towards heart because that would also explain the bumblefoot but it absolutely would not be the first time a small animal had 2 unrelated issues pop up. So we are going to do trial antibiotics and if she isn't clearing up in a couple of days, I report back to Dr. Ford and we switch her to Pimobendan, a heart medication, and if/when CHF kicks in, we will add Lasix.

I have a bunch of updates to do but I'm going to break them down into shorter-ish posts.

Butterfly was on one of my bigger concerns today. Her hips are indeed messed up from either being pregnant, giving birth or a combo of the two. Both femoral heads are loose in the socket. In theory this should tighten up over time but we need to monitor closely. I totally forgot to ask Dr. Ford while I was there if this warranted bed rest or exercise to strengthen things up. I sent an email but it's after hours so I dont expect to hear anything back until maybe tomorrow.

We decided to pop an ultrasound to start off and her bladder showed sludge and some of that sludge looked like it was trying to form a stone. This is pretty unusual for such a young pig. They typically need the extra calcium for bone development and since she was pregnant she would have needed extra calcium to support the babies. There is an off chance she is slightly older than she appears. She could be a very petite young adult with itty bitty nails. I do have some seniors that still have what I lovingly call "baby demon nails". Gauging ages on piggies with no background info is not an exact science.

We tried to get a glimpse of her kidneys but there was some gas in the area preventing a good view. Thankfully her uterus looks good though.
We are going to give her antibiotics (where there is sludge, there is usually bacteria) and some pain meds and follow sludge/stones protocol. Push alllll the fluids, low calcium diet, urinary tabs (we have Sherwood tabs right now). We will check in with Dr Ford in Wednesday and decide if we want to do an additional ultrasound to check her kidneys for the excessive drinking, blood work, urinalysis or all 3. I really want mama to be ok. I lost her babies, my heart would break even more if I lost her too.

We really need help with d o n a t i o n s right now. Our account is the lowest its ever been and we need to hold ourselves over until the t shirt, a u c t i o n and fb lump f u n d s comes in towards the end of the month.

This is pretty accurate.

I have lots of updates to give but I'm leaving the vet office and absolutely starving so i'll type it all up later.

In the meantime, dont forget to join our A U C T I O N group. To join, see the post from thia morning.

Also we absolutely, positively need help with our vet visit from today so that we have enough to get veggies this week. Please see our post from last night for more info on that.

Im so sorry to be so vague but adding all the details of what we need seems to drastically reduce the amount of people seeing out posts :(
