Need some tips on protecting your dog's paws in these ever-changing Chicago winter days? You can protect dog paws in cold weather by applying protective paw balms (e.g., Musher's Secret, petroleum jelly) to create a barrier against ice and salt, using protective dog boots for freezing temperatures, trimming hair between paw pads to prevent snowballs, and wiping paws with warm water after walks.

Paw Balms and Waxes: Apply products like Musher's Secret or Vaseline before walks. These create a barrier against ice, snow, and chemical deicers, while moisturizing to prevent painful cracking.

Dog Boots: For extreme cold or salty sidewalks, boots provide the best insulation and protection against freezing, harsh chemicals, and ice.

Post-Walk Cleanup: Thoroughly wipe paws with a towel or dip them in warm water after returning from outside to remove salt and ice, which can cause irritation or chemical burns if licked.

Trim Paw Hair: Keep the hair between a dog's toes trimmed short to prevent ice balls from forming and trapping salt.

Use Pet-Safe Deicers: Use pet-safe, salt-free deicers on your own walkways to prevent chemical burns to your dog's paws.

Limit Exposure: Keep walks short in extreme, freezing, or snowy weather.

Thank you for helping us help your dogs safe and healthy!
