This horse had been experiencing repeated colic episodes despite living a relatively low-stress lifestyle, making this a good reminder that ulcers can still be part of the picture. Gastroscopy was key in this case, allowing us to identify not only the presence of ulcers, but also the specific type involved.
The horse was transitioned to an all-forage diet and treated with 30 days of Gastrogard along with twice-daily sucralfate. Sucralfate therapy will continue for an additional few weeks before medications are discontinued.
Behavioral changes, recurrent colic episodes, or changes in performance can have many possible causes, but ulcers are always worth considering as part of the diagnostic process. Keep an eye out for the horses that appear calm, but are silently dealing with their stress. Identifying the underlying issue early can make a significant difference in your horse’s comfort, health, and performance.
