This horse had been experiencing repeated colic episodes despite living a relatively low-stress lifestyle, making this a good reminder that ulcers can still be part of the picture. Gastroscopy was key in this case, allowing us to identify not only the presence of ulcers, but also the specific type involved.

The horse was transitioned to an all-forage diet and treated with 30 days of Gastrogard along with twice-daily sucralfate. Sucralfate therapy will continue for an additional few weeks before medications are discontinued.

Behavioral changes, recurrent colic episodes, or changes in performance can have many possible causes, but ulcers are always worth considering as part of the diagnostic process. Keep an eye out for the horses that appear calm, but are silently dealing with their stress. Identifying the underlying issue early can make a significant difference in your horse’s comfort, health, and performance.

Eyes! An often underestimated condition in equine medicine. They require rapid treatment and can be very time-consuming, but seeing a healthy eye at the end makes it all worth it.

We have to brag on this owner. It was their dedication that made this a successful outcome. We are talking every 2 hour treatments when the SPL was placed! 👏

Picture #1 is April 25th. At this time this horse was placed on frequent medication with ointments. Including an anti-fungal which is important where we live. In addition to topicals, this patient was placed on twice daily banamine. Trazodone was also prescribed in hopes of making frequent topical treatments easier for both.

Picture #2 is recheck on April 30th. Despite their best efforts and using all the tricks, our patient here was not loving the consistent ointments. Prior to staining, a yellow plaque present over the ulcer was noted. This raised concern for fungal involvement. The eye was debrided at the time, and a subpalpebral lavage (SPL) was placed. Medications were switched to a solution form. This makes it easier on both owner and patient, and ensures proper delivery of frequent medications (every 2 hours) to the eye.

Picture #3 is recheck on May 2nd. Making progress! But not out of the woods yet. The eye was again debrided.

Picture #4 is recheck on May 4th. Still making good progress. Again debrided. Frequency of medications decreased 2 days after this recheck.

Picture #5 is recheck on May 13th (There was a recheck prior to this with adequate progress but do not have a great picture). Just the slightest uptake of stain that is hard to even appreciate in the picture. Planning to take the SPL out next recheck.

Picture #6 is today May 17th. Final recheck! Completely healed with no stain uptake and the SPL was removed🥳

Meet Shyanne! 🤍🐎

Shyanne is one of the friendly faces you’ll see out in the field as a vet tech with Prestige Equine. Many of you know her already! She grew up barrel racing, so she understands firsthand the level of care, attention, and heart that goes into keeping performance horses feeling their best.

We’re so grateful to have her on the team. Outside of work, Shyanne and her husband enjoy spending time at the beach or out on the trails with their dog, Kilo☀️

Look closely, Prestige Equine has some big news🔍🐴

Dr. McCreary is now officially Dr. Kempfer!

While the name has changed, one thing hasn’t… the same dedication, attention to detail, and genuine care she brings to every horse and client.

We’re also excited to share that with this new chapter comes a move to our Deer Park, FL location which is 15 minutes west of Melbourne. Don’t worry, we are still servicing the same areas and are always happy to work with those outside of our typical radius when possible.

Same doctor you know and trust, just with a new last name ✨

Cervical facet injections!

▫️Neck sensitivity
▫️Resistance to flexions
▫️Struggling in collection
▫️Decrease in speed/shorter forelimb stride
▫️Mysterious forelimb lameness

All of these can be signs of neck pain or arthritis. To understand the full extent of the problem, X-rays and ultrasound imaging are essential. In severe cases, horses may show neurological symptoms.

The good news? Neck arthritis is often treatable! Treatment usually requires minimal downtime and will have your athlete back to feeling their best🩵

📸 Case of the Day: TMJ Injections!

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be a subtle source of discomfort and decrease in performance. Common signs include:
🔹 Resistance to the bit
🔹 Head tossing
🔹 Difficulty with flexion

In this case, our patient had a very unique symptom—he would chew with his head tilted completely to one side!

➡️ Skull x-rays showed no obvious issues, but when we looked at the TMJs, we noticed a decrease in joint space on the right side. While there wasn’t significant arthritis present, his clinical signs pointed us toward treating the TMJs.

💉 After treatment, this horse is now chewing comfortably and normally again—no more sideways chomping! Patient is in the last video.

✨ A great reminder that sometimes subtle signs can point us toward hidden sources of discomfort.
