“The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” — Vince Lombardi

Keep showing up. Keep pushing harder. Success is earned, never given.

They used to joke at home about running a 2.9. In March 2026, JC Flake and his brother-in-law Dustin Egusquiza actually did it. 🤠

JC Flake is a heeler from Milsap, Texas, who’s spent years building his career, roping with partners like Pedro Egurrola, and finishing close to the top of the standings without breaking through. In 2024, he ended up 17th in the world, one spot away from the NFR.

In 2025, he hit a different gear. In the summer, Dustin Egusquiza, an eight-time NFR header and Flake’s brother-in-law, decided to rope with him, a move that came after Dustin split from his longtime partner Levi Lord. In their first weekend together, they won the Durant Pro Rodeo in Oklahoma with a 3.3, tying the PRCA world record. Flake said at the time that he was in no rush to climb the standings.

They went on to win Canby, Heber City, Lehi, Durant and Castle Rock, but missed the NFR. He narrowly missed qualifying that year, which only added fuel.

They started 2026 strong, winning the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo in Odessa with an 8.3 on two head, giving each $6,415. Then, on March 25, at Rodeo Austin, it happened. Dustin and JC stopped the clock in 2.9 seconds, a new PRCA world record by a full three-tenths of a second. They’d joked about being 2.9 at home, they said, but never thought it could actually happen. Flake credited Dustin, saying it’s hard for a heeler to be 2.9 without a header like him, and said they hadn’t known what to do when they saw it.

JC rode his mare, PlayinMetallicaFuel. Now she’s a world-record mare. 🐎🌵🏆

They kept going. They won Sikeston, Missouri, and, after a slow summer, an $11,991 week put them back in the top-15 conversation. JC also got a call to make his Cinch Timed Event Championship debut when Jess Tierney was sidelined with a back injury.

Brothers-in-law, a mare and a record that may stand for a long time.

He missed his first NFR by $643. A year later, 19-year-old Nicky Northcott is third in the world. 🤠

Nicky Northcott is a heeler from Stephenville, Texas, and he grew up with a front-row seat to what it takes to reach the Thomas & Mack. His dad, Steve, is a 10-time NFR qualifier who won the 1996 world championship and the NFR average as a heeler. Nicky has said his dad was a big help in his career.

He was roping with the best early. At 15, two-time champion header Clay Smith asked him to rope at an Ariat World Series qualifier in Athens, Texas. In 2020, he won $20,000 at a USTRC roping with Tyler Tryan, the son of three-time world champion Clay Tryan. His horse Brown, he’s said, has been with him since he was young.

At 18, he roped the extras with Cory Kidd at the 2024 NFR, just after turning 18. In 2025, he went full-time as a rookie, and it wasn’t even close. Nicky earned the Resistol Rookie Heeler of the Year title by more than double the field, winning the Horse Heaven Roundup in Kennewick, Washington, with Clay Smith, and the Wilderness Circuit year-end championship. 🏆

But he missed the NFR by just $643, finishing 16th. His mission, he said, was simply to make the Finals. He didn’t settle.

In 2026, he came back stronger. He won the NFR Open in Colorado Springs, heeling for Jake Smith with a 4.3 in the finals, worth $16,000 a man. 🌵 Then he and Tyler Tryan, partners and longtime friends, won Cheyenne Frontier Days, beating the same team they’d split a check with a year earlier, Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira. That win put them third in the world.

Both of their dads are champions: Steve Northcott, the 1996 world champion heeler, and Clay Tryan, a three-time world champion header. Their sons are chasing the same gold buckle.

His plan for 2026, he said, was to catch two feet more.

The next generation is already here.

Tyler Waguespack is chasing a piece of rodeo history. 👀🔥

Heading into his 12th Wrangler NFR ranked No. 2 in the World Standings, the five-time World Champion is just one title away from tying Homer Pettigrew's record of six steer wrestling world championships.

Fellow five-time World Champion Luke Branquinho says he believes Waguespack has what it takes to not only tie the record, but potentially surpass it before his career is over.

Final 15 is presented by OptiWize
