Richard O. Rosen was the architect and superintendent of the construction of the Powers Mansion. When completed in 1910 it was said to be the best and most ornate house ever built in Decatur. The 13-room, three-story home was constructed at the cost of $83,000 plus the lot cost, the equivalent of $2.8 million today.

The mansion is heavy brick construction with basement walls that are 16” thick and all other walls 12” thick. It displays many influences of the Columbian Exposition and the revival of classical architecture. The third floor features a huge ballroom with maple floors and cedar-lined storage benches under the dormer windows. An electric elevator connects it to the other floors and the large basement garage.
