Two more bench have crossed the Macon County line! This beauty was delivered to the Garden Club of Decatur. By the time I got the 2nd bench delivered, it was too dark to get a good picture, so that will come later. Each bench requires 200 lbs of lids to make, so this trip took a total of 400 lbs of lids.
I would like to thank Paula’s Retired Recyclers for all of their hard work and dedication to this program. It would not be possible without all of the volunteers who donate lids, clean/dry the lids, and sort the acceptable lids from the unacceptable lids.
I have to give a huge shout out to the Scovill Zoo. When I partnered with the zoo to get them 4 - 8’ benches for the Petting zoo, I told them the biggest problem is finding a place to be able to spread out to sort the lids. I asked Ken, the zoo keeper at that time, if it would be possible to use one of their rooms when they were not already booked. He agreed to allow us to use a room. It was truly a game changer for being able to comfortably sort lids. Once we secured the benches for the zoo, I asked Ken if there was any possibility we could continue to use the room as needed to help others get benches. I held my breath until I heard him say YES! Paula’s Retired Recyclers were rollin’ and then I heard Ken was leaving his position at the zoo. How would that impact us using the room?? In come Heather and Julie! We did not miss a stride with our lid sorting parties at the zoo. How awesome is it that Scovill Zoo has payed it forward to so many others to be able to get their benches. I can guarantee you, if we lost the use of the room at the zoo, this program would come to an end.
To date, the lids collected have produced 1 mural, 29 benches, 8 birdbaths, and one picnic table. That is a grand total of 7,082 pounds of lids that did NOT end up in the landfill.
