Some dog training advice needs to be burned away 🙃

We know that fear and pain can come with serious fallout, including increased anxiety, avoidance, fear-related aggression, and learned helplessness.

So maybe we can stop teaching people to "correct the growl" or "grab them by the scruff."

Let's start teaching people how dogs actually learn! Because better information means better choices, which leads to better outcomes for dogs!

SUMMER REMINDER: Dogs can overheat quickly, especially during exercise and outdoor play! When temperatures and humidity rise, dogs have a harder time cooling themselves through panting. High humidity makes it harder for dogs to cool themselves efficiently, increasing the risk of exhaustion and heatstroke.

Remember: This is an informal guideline. Always consider the individual dog, activity level, shade, airflow, and outdoor conditions.

Simple game for training a reliable recall!

1️⃣ Place a treat on the ground
2️⃣ While dog is eating the treat, take a few steps back
3️⃣ Say their recall cue like "Honey, come!"
4️⃣ Reward them generously for coming to you
5️⃣ Repeat in different environments
6️⃣ Slowly incorporate distractions

The more you practice, the stronger the recall!

We hear this one a lot. And we understand why. Hope is a powerful thing when you're living with a dog whose behavior feels overwhelming.

But here's what years of working with dogs who "didn't grow out of it" has taught us: behavior that is rooted in fear, anxiety, or frustration rarely resolves on its own. Without the right intervention it typically does one of two things. It stays exactly the same. Or it gets worse.

The longer a behavior goes unaddressed the more practiced your dog becomes at it. And the more practiced they become the harder it is to change.

We're not saying this to scare you. We're saying it because we've seen what happens when families wait years hoping things will shift on their own and we've also seen what happens when they get the right support early.

The difference is significant.

If any of these three signs sound familiar, it might be time to stop waiting and start getting answers.

Does your dog love to sniff, search, and use their brain? Then they may love Happy Ratters!

Happy Ratters is a fun scent-based activity where dogs search through a simulated urban environment using boxes, bags, and other clean props to find the hidden rat. It’s a great way to let your dog use their natural instincts while building confidence and focus.

Some benefits include:
🐾 Provides mental enrichment
🐾 Encourages problem solving
🐾 Builds confidence
🐾 Gives dogs a fun job to do
🐾 Helps strengthen the bond between you and your dog
🐾 Offers an indoor activity option for dogs who prefer a lower-allergen environment

Our rats are well-loved pets who are safely housed in protective tubes, making this activity safe and stress-free for both dogs and rats!

Ready to try something new with your dog? The next round starts on August 30! Visit our website to reserve your spot!

For anyone who does Nose Work, isn't this the best feeling? 🤣

“Why does my dog listen perfectly at home but forget everything outside?”

This is one of the most common things we hear. The truth is, your dog isn’t being stubborn! They’re learning that skills have to be practiced in different environments with different levels of distractions.

This is Dash, who is extremely fearful. You can see how his environmental confidence diminishes as the environment changes. We used to not be able to get him on a leash at all!

He has built a strong foundation indoors, like in our classroom or at home, where things are predictable and familiar. But when we move into the lobby, then outside, new sights, sounds, people, and movement make the skill much harder.

That’s why we don’t skip steps. We build from low distractions to higher distractions so dogs can be successful along the way. A behavior that looks great inside still needs practice in the real world before we can expect it to hold up everywhere.

Training is so much more than just teaching the behavior! It's also about teaching your dog how to use that behavior no matter where they are!

Ever feel like your high-energy dog has an endless battery? 😂

While exercise is important, many high-energy dogs also need opportunities to use their brains.

Sniffing, training, problem solving, and other forms of enrichment can be just as valuable as physical activity when it comes to helping your dog feel fulfilled!

So here's a reminder that providing a healthy balance of physical exercise, mental enrichment, and rest can do wonders for a high energy dog instead of just exercising them endlessly!

Every dog is different, but finding that balance can make a big difference.
