Did you know that the area from your horse’s knee and hock down to his hoof contains little to no muscle?
Instead this area is comprised mainly of bones, tendons, and ligaments. Due to the important role that tendons and ligaments play in flexing and extending the joints in this area, today we are going to share some fun facts.
Fun facts about the tendons and ligaments in the horse’s lower leg:
1) Tendons are more elastic than ligaments and connect bone to muscle. Ligaments are more taught and connect bone to cartilage.
2) One of the longest tendons in the horse’s leg is the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT), and one of the longest ligaments is the suspensory ligament.
3) Injuries to the tendons typically occur in the front legs because they are responsible for supporting approximately 60% of the horse’s weight. Injuries to the ligaments, on the other hand are equally as likely to occur in the front legs as in the hind legs.
4) While it is normal for a horse’s muscles to increase in temperature during exercise, a horse’s tendons should never feel warm to the touch. The reason for this is that heat prevents oxygen from reaching the tendons, and can lead to injury. Heated tendons are a classic sign of an overuse injury.
5) If your horse is diagnosed with a tendon or ligament injury, your vet will rate the seriousness of the injury from mild to severe. The degree of severity will determine treatment options as well as prognosis and rehabilitation guidelines.
