What is a struvite crystal?
A struvite crystal in cats is a type of urinary crystal made of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. These crystals can form in a cat's bladder, sometimes leading to struvite uroliths (bladder stones) or urinary tract issues, such as feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD).
Causes of Struvite Crystals in Cats:
• Diet: Diets high in magnesium, phosphorus, and alkaline urine pH can contribute.
• Dehydration: Insufficient water intake leads to concentrated urine, promoting crystal formation.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Bacteria can alter urine pH, making it more alkaline and encouraging struvite formation.
• Genetics & Breed: Some cats (e.g., Siamese, Persians) may be predisposed.
• Stress: Stress can contribute to urinary issues like FLUTD, which may be associated with struvite formation.
Symptoms of Struvite
Crystals in Cats:
• Straining to urinate
• Frequent trips to the litter box with little urine output
• Blood in urine (hematuria)
• Painful urination (vocalizing while peeing)
• Licking the ge***al area excessively
• Urinating outside the litter box
Treatment:
• Dietary changes: Prescription urinary diets (like Hill's c/d, Royal Canin Urinary SO) help dissolve crystals and prevent recurrence.
• Increased water intake: Wet food and water fountains encourage hydration.
• Medications: If a UT is present, antibiotics may be prescribed.
• Surgery (if necessary): In severe cases, surgery
(cystotomy) may be needed to remove large bladder stones.
Prevention:
• Feed a well-balanced, low-magnesium diet
• Provide plenty of fresh water
• Reduce stress (maintain a stable environment, use pheromone diffusers)
• Regular veterinary check-ups and urine tests to monitor urinary health.
