Mission of Mary Cooperative

Mission of Mary Cooperative The Mission of Mary Cooperative is an urban farming non-profit on the east side of Dayton, Ohio.

The Mission of Mary Cooperative is a 501c3 organization that operates a network of urban farm locations on the eastside of Dayton. We strive to form community in our neighborhood around the food that we grow and the land that we care for. We are committed to participating in a just food system that ensures all are able to access and afford healthy food options. We have been growing and distributin

g healthy, chemical free produce since 2010 and continue to expand our growing operations. We operate a 24 week CSA membership program with a dual price model, a seasonal farm stand, and several youth and adult educational programs seasonally. The evolution of Mission of Mary Cooperative is on-going and we are excited to share this journey with you. Our 2025 CSA program just filled up! Thank you so much to everyone who signed up, both new and returning members! We are still accepting applications, but we will place new applicants on a waitlist. And don’t forget, we will still be operating our farm stand throughout the season, which you don’t have to be a CSA member to purchase from. We hope to see you all in May! :)

As part of our series for CSA Appreciation Week, today we’re talking about Mission of Mary’s development over the years, particularly the farm and CSA program. Mission of Mary originally came into being because of the work and vision of a Marianist lay community; if you’re interested in learning more about what that means, check out marianist.com/MLC-NA!

Thanks to the The Garden Club of America for sharing Mission of Mary Cooperative's mission and work in Dayton, OH as a nonprofit educational urban farm that is creating a local just food system as well as generational change by educating children and families how to grow their own food and improving food security in a multi-generational poverty area. Also thanks for highlighting our partnership and support from The Garden Club of Dayton! Kudos to Shawn Lambert Spain for the well written article!

In May 2024, The Garden Club of Dayton (GCD) supported Mission of Mary (MOM) Cooperative, an urban farm, with a $12,500 grant. Since 2009, MOM has been revitalizing the inner east side of Dayton by transforming vacant lots into productive vegetable gardens, including Lincoln Hill Garden, a plot developed by MOM featuring twenty community garden beds, three greenhouses, an orchard, and a natural playground. MOM gardens produce over 60,000 pounds of fresh food annually, aiming to place as much of this nutritious harvest as possible on the tables of local families.

Last week, we gathered to move one of the high tunnels at our Lincoln Hill Garden. The main metal framework is set on wheels so it can be rolled along a track (after removing the pieces anchoring it in place). Since our cherry tomatoes had all been removed already and we were about to get a hard freeze, it was time to move the tunnel over a new bed. Now it’s sheltering some carrots and greens that had growing out in the open!

People often ask us what we do during the winter off-season. While we do still have veggies growing, things slow down enough for us to do other needed behind-the-scenes tasks - like catch up on maintenance.

Some of our high tunnels are starting to look like Swiss cheese, so it’s time to replace the covering! This week we cleared out our slicer tomato house, and today we took advantage of the warm weather (and a volunteer group!) to remove the plastic.
