Accessible Veterinary Care

10/20/2026

Happy ! This week, we're celebrating the dedicated veterinary professionals who help make compassionate, accessible veterinary care possible for the communities we serve.

A special shoutout to Kelly Stetter, RVT, our Accessible Veterinary Care Program Coordinator, and Jodie Cheun, our veterinary assistant! From supporting patients during appointments and procedures to helping ensure pets and their families receive the care they need, Kelly and Jodie are an essential part of what makes our program successful.

Thank you both for your hard work, compassion, and commitment to improving access to veterinary care for pets and the people who love them!

Accessible Veterinary Care is expanding our outreach to support local veterans and their pets!

Through a new partnership with VA caseworkers serving veterans in Yolo County, our team is providing pet food and supplies to those in need, as well as veterinary care for veterans who are homebound or face barriers to accessing services. Together with Dr. Planas at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, we’ve already provided care for approximately a dozen pets.

Donated food from Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Purina and veterinary products from Merck Animal Health and Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. help make this work possible. As we grow this effort, our goal is to reach more vulnerable community members and help keep their pets healthy, cared for, and by their side.

Fireworks can be stressful for pets, but a little preparation can go a long way toward preventing lost pets and avoidable veterinary emergencies. We're sharing a few practical tips to help keep pets safe this holiday weekend:

- Make sure ID tags and microchip information are up-to-date (you can also write your phone # on their collar if you can’t get a tag in time)
- Keep your pets indoors and secured
- Leave your pets at home when you go out for parties and fireworks
- Keep hazardous materials away from pets (fireworks, sparklers, charcoal, toxic foods, etc)

At the most recent Covelo Clinic, one of our Accessible Veterinary Care programs, volunteers from the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine provided essential veterinary care for hundreds of animals in an underserved rural community while helping train the next generation of veterinarians in accessible, community-centered care.

From routine wellness visits and spay/neuter surgeries to helping a severely injured dog named Nala receive lifesaving treatment, the clinic demonstrated how supporting animal health can strengthen the wellbeing of entire communities.

Read the story:

In late March, volunteers from the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine traveled to Covelo, California for another weekend of compassionate, community-centered veterinary care through the Covelo Clinic. Entirely volunteer-run, the clinic brings together veterinarians, veterinary students, ve...

Access to veterinary care supports not only animal health, but the well-being of the people and communities who care for them.

This , we recognize the barriers many families face in obtaining timely, affordable veterinary care and the importance of building solutions that make care more accessible for all.

At UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, the PetSmart Charities Endowed Chair in Accessible Veterinary Care is helping advance equitable approaches through research, education, and community engagement. From community-based care programs to disaster preparedness and response, our work is focused on keeping people and pets healthy together.

For many families, even routine veterinary care is financially out of reach and the barriers can feel impossible to overcome. Your gift can help change that.

No matter the amount, your support removes barriers to care and can make the difference between suffering and healing, between goodbye and more time together.

We have less than a week to reach our goal of $3,000 and we're still only 41% of the way there! Please consider making a gift today: www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/crowdfundAVC

We have a donation match set up! For every donor to our campaign this month, an additional $5 per individual donor (up to $200) will be donated to our program.

We’re only about 22% of the way to maximize our match and at 40% towards our ultimate goal of raising $3,000. Please consider contributing today to help raise funds that’ll cover the cost of medical care for pets in need in our community: www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/crowdfundAVC
