Positron Emission Tomography (PET scans) for horses was pioneered at UC Davis a decade ago. Since that initial research, the imaging modality has quickly soared to unimaginable heights - now in use at major race tracks and leading equine hospitals throughout the country. TheHorse.com takes a look back at those 10 years.

Positron emission tomography (PET) can reveal active processes other diagnostic modalities might miss.

California faces a critical shortage of food animal veterinarians. And this isn’t just a local issue, it’s a national crisis. Since World War II, the U.S. has lost 90% of its large animal veterinarians. Today, only 3.4% of veterinarians serve the food animal industry. How can UC Davis help turn this around?

“UC Davis actively recruits rural and first-generation veterinary students, allowing them to return to their communities to practice.”

As horses have dispersed from the event in Texas, there are now confirmed EHM (neurological form of EHV-1) cases in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Strict biosecurity measures are vital to contain the spread!

Two horses with confirmed Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy traveled to Oklahoma from Waco, Texas after participating in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event on Nov. 5-9. These cases have caused the cancellation of the remainder of the Barrel Futurities of America (BFA) World Championship scheduled to run Nov. 17-22 at Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK. The extent of this outbreak is not yet fully known.

EHM is a neurologic syndrome caused by infection with EHV-1 virus. EHV-1 is spread by inhalation of respiratory droplets or contact with nasal discharge which may be direct or via contamination of objects like tack, buckets, clothing and hands.

Strict biosecurity measures and disinfection protocols are vital to contain the spread!

Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) outbreak reported by Texas veterinarians after the recent World Championship Barrel Racing Finals in the Waco area on November 5-9. Be advised if you had horses at that show. Share with others you know were there. There are great tips in their link on clinical signs to look out for and biosecurity measures to implement. PRESS RELEASE: Commissioner Sid Miller and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) today issued an alert to Texas horsemen of an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) reported by Texas veterinarians after the recent World Championship Barrel Racing (WPRA) Finals in the Waco area on November 5-9. Commissioner Miller is urging all horse owners, trainers, and venue operators who attended or were in proximity to the event, or who have recently returned from any large equine gathering in the Waco region in the last 14 days to act swiftly, monitor their animals carefully, and implement heightened biosecurity measures.

“This virus can spread fast, it can be deadly, and the earliest signs are often so subtle they’re easy to miss,” Commissioner Miller, himself an avid horseman, said. “That’s why monitoring your horses right now is critical. The quicker we identify a potential case, the better chance we have to protect not only our animals, but the entire Texas equine community.”
