**In Loving Memory of Casino**
It’s taken me a few days to find the right words to honor a horse who brought so much joy, opportunity, and success—not only to my program, but to every rider lucky enough to know him. Casino wasn’t always the easiest ride, but that’s what made him so impactful. He *made* riders. He challenged them in all the right ways, while always remaining honest, tolerant, and safe. A true teacher.
Casino had a personality all his own. He was full of quirks—whether he was trying to lick you into submission or going to great lengths for a salt lick, he always made us laugh. He was charmingly accident-prone, the kind of horse you wanted to wrap in bubble wrap and post a full-time lookout for just to avoid the next vet bill. And yet, he was worth every bit of it.
In the short time he was with us, Casino accomplished more than we ever expected. With his main rider, Natalie, he had an unforgettable couple of show seasons. In 2023, the pair earned Overall Beginning Rider, Novice Division Champion, and placed Third Overall Medal Rider. In 2024, they built on that success with an incredible season, bringing home Low Hunter Division Champion, Modified Equitation Division Champion, Reserve Overall Hunter Rider, Overall Equitation Rider, Overall Medal Rider, and Overall Hunter Horse of the year. Their partnership was inspiring—built on trust, hard work, and a whole lot of heart.
Though he had a full life before coming to us, we take comfort in knowing that his final 10 months were peaceful. He stepped away from the demands of a high-pressure lesson program and spent his days simply being loved—lightly ridden by a couple of the sweetest, most caring teenagers who cherished every moment with him. I know they will miss him dearly, as will I.
From the first moment I sat on him, I knew he was special. He was a gift—one I’ll forever be thankful for. I'm endlessly grateful to those who entrusted him to me and thought of my program when he needed a new home. It’s a reminder that when you are good to others, goodness finds its way back to you.
Rest easy, Casino. You were one of the great ones.
