As a veterinarian, working with llamas has been one of the most challenging parts of my practice. Their gentle nature and unique physiology require a thoughtful, species-specific approach that goes beyond standard livestock. As more people recognize their value as companion, fiber, and therapy animals, veterinary medicine plays a crucial role in supporting their health and overall well-being.

Meet the kinkajou!
These adorable rainforest mammals—also known as “honey bears”—are native to Central and South America. With their prehensile tails and big eyes, they’re built for life in the trees and are most active at night.

While they may look cuddly, kinkajous aren’t ideal pets for most people. They require a specialized diet, plenty of space, and are known for their very strong musky scent. Plus, their nocturnal nature and occasional aggression make them a tough fit for the average home.

We love and respect kinkajous—but we don’t recommend keeping them as pets.

I want a Monkey!! 🙈

Are they actually good pets?

And the answer is: NO.

Marmosets are not good pets because they are wild animals with complex physical, social, and emotional needs that are difficult to meet in a home environment. They can become aggressive, are prone to stress, and may suffer in captivity. Their diet is also very specific—they need a variety of fruits, vegetables, insects, tree sap, and specialized supplements to stay healthy, which is hard to provide outside of a professional setting.

Tail amputation on bearded dragon

Bearded dragons are generally not aggressive by nature (which is why they make such good pets). They usually do not show signs of aggression towards people, but when they are babies they can bite each others tail or limbs causing severe wounds.

This little dragon with necrosis on the tail had to get an amputation of 1/3 of its tail due to severe wounds and the consequent necrosis of the tail.

Hooves 🐄🐂🐃🐐🐑🦌🦒🦙🐪

Ruminants hooves are keratin just like our fingernails. Trimming is the single most important task to help prevent lameness, soft hooves, smelly hooves, and hoof rot. Checking the animal’s feet regularly and frequently gives you the head start you need to care of a bad hoof before the condition spreads.

In this case, Luna’s hooves were way overdue, and they were impeding a proper movement of the legs.

We trimmed them! And, we gave her some needed love. She is back running around in the farm :)

Surgery on a Sugar Glider

This female sugar glider came to the hospital after her tail got entangled in some toys/ropes hanging in her cage.

The tail was fractured in several parts and the tissue was already necrotic (lack of blood perfusion causing ischemia of the tissue).

We rushed her into surgery to perform a tail amputation at the base of the tail, where the tissue was healthy.

She did great! She went home with pain meds and antibiotics.

Kinkajou 💙

Beautiful animals not such a great pet 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Because they are not tame, kinkajous do not make good pets, no matter how cute you might think they are! Kinkajous have a painful bite and can be destructive to a home in the middle of the night, when they are most active.

Cockatiels 🇦🇺

Cockatiels are far less demanding than the larger parrot species. In fact, they are relatively easy to take care of, and, if well socialized, make very loving and amusing pets.

They can live up to 20 years. 😊

Are you thinking about getting a parrot?

At EXOVET we encourage you to get a cockatiel instead of a larger bird like: macaws, amazons or cockatoos. They are beautiful ( but loud) birds, but also the most commonly unwanted after the owners realize the amount of work, time and space they need.
