☀️ Summer is almost here… 🐾

Hot pavement, rising temperatures, and humidity can quickly become dangerous for all pets, including dogs, cats, and exotics. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping them safe this season.

🐶 Walk during cooler hours (early morning or evening)
🖐️ Check pavement—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws
🚗 Never leave pets in the car—even for a minute
💧 Always provide fresh water and access to shade
🌡️ Watch for signs of heatstroke (excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting)
🏡 Keep pets indoors during extreme heat
🐾 Consider paw protection (booties or shaded paths)
✂️ Keep coats maintained, but avoid shaving double-coated breeds
🆔 Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip info are up to date

🦜 Exotic Pet Tips:
🌡️ Keep enclosures in temperature-controlled areas—avoid direct sunlight
💨 Ensure proper ventilation (no stagnant or overheated air)
💧 Maintain humidity levels appropriate for your species
🚫 Avoid sudden temperature changes (AC vents, drafts, moving cages)
🐢 Provide fresh water daily and monitor for dehydration or stress

At St. Charles Veterinary Hospital, we’re here to help keep all your pets safe and healthy this summer 💙

If you notice anything concerning or have questions, don’t wait—reach out to us.

📍 Save this post to stay prepared & share with a fellow pet parent.

Tiny wings, big fight.

This baby White-winged Dove was brought to us injured and in need of immediate care. Our team was able to stabilize this little one and provide supportive treatment to help give it the best chance possible.

The dove will now be transferred to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center for continued strengthening and care with the goal of a future release back into the wild where it belongs.

If you ever find injured wildlife, please call us first for guidance before attempting to care for or move them on your own. Every species has different needs, and early proper care can make all the difference.

We’re grateful to be able to play a small part in helping wildlife in our community.

Pet Pool Safety: What to Watch Out For 🐾☀️

With pool days in full swing, it’s important to keep our furry friends safe while they enjoy the fun! 💦🐶

⚠️ Pool chemicals can cause burns if ingested
⚠️ Chlorinated water may lead to vomiting or diarrhea
⚠️ Saltwater can cause dangerous sodium imbalances
⚠️ Sunscreens & bug sprays can be toxic to pets
⚠️ Alcohol is extremely dangerous—even in small amounts

👀 Watch for signs like:
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, excessive thirst, or trouble walking

💡 Always provide fresh water and discourage pets from drinking pool or ocean water!

🚨 If you think your pet has been exposed to something toxic, don’t wait—seek veterinary care immediately.

📞 Contact us at 863-438-6600 if you have concerns or need guidance—we’re here for you and your pets 24/7!

🐾 Patient Spotlight: Rambo’s Incredible Recovery 🐾

Meet Rambo, a brave 2-year-old pup who gave us quite a scare but also reminded us how strong our pets can be.

Rambo was rushed in after suddenly vomiting multiple times at home and collapsing. He was quickly diagnosed with a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)—a life-threatening emergency that can progress very quickly in dogs.

Over the next several days, Rambo faced a tough battle:

* He developed low blood pressure requiring emergency medications
* Experienced an abnormal heart rhythm, which was treated and stabilized
* Lost his ability to clot properly, leading to internal bleeding that required a plasma transfusion
* Had a second reaction hours later—something that can happen even after initial improvement
* And suffered severe gastrointestinal upset, including bloody diarrhea, from the effects of shock on his body

Through it all, Rambo stayed strong.

After 6 days of intensive care, we are so happy to share that Rambo has made a full recovery and his prognosis is excellent!

What caused this?

In many cases like Rambo’s, the exact cause isn’t seen but the most common trigger is believed to be insect stings, such as a wasp.

⚠️ What pet owners should know:

An allergic reaction in dogs doesn’t always look like swelling. It can show up as:

* Sudden vomiting or diarrhea
* Weakness or collapse
* Pale gums or lethargy

If you ever notice these signs, seek veterinary care immediately, acting fast can save your pet’s life.

Rambo’s story is a powerful reminder of how quickly things can change and how important it is to have a team ready to act when it matters most.

Before heading home, Rambo proudly received his Certificate of Bravery 🏅and we were all so happy to see this sweet boy walk out the door healthy and back where he belongs. 🐾💙
