We had a very special guest at the clinic a couple of days ago! This is a nighthawk. It's actually not a hawk at all and is in the night jar family, a cousin of the owl. They're absolutely one of my favorite species of bird! And unfortunately their numbers have been plummeting across North America in the last few decades.

I found her in the morning injured on the side of the road. She had some neurological signs but no broken bones. After some rest and nursing she was able to fly off on her own in less than 48 hours. Oftentimes when you find an injured bird, they just need a dark place, quiet and warmth. And of course contact your local wildlife rehabilitationist.

Did you know that studies have shown that petting your cat increases food consumption. So if you have a cat like Salem here who is elderly and not eating well, simply petting him can increase the amount of food that he consumes. Give it a try! (You'll see me lifting his food bowl here because sometimes he likes it. Apparently not today LOL). If you crank up the volume, you'll hear his beautiful motor.

Fritz became paralyzed on his right side. He could barely sit up, he couldn't posture to p*e or p**p, and just wasn't himself. After just two visits, this little trooper was running around like a crazy kid!
His doggy momma played a huge roll in his recovery. She dedicated herself to his at home rehabilitation exercises and he blossomed!

Dr. Rider here and I ❤️ Opossums.
People may dislike opossums for their appearance, nocturnal habits, and perceived association with garbage and disease. While they are often misunderstood, opossums are generally harmless and play a beneficial role in the ecosystem by consuming insects, ticks, and rodents.

So, next time you see an opossum, think of all the ticks NOT getting on your dog!

I’m a possum, and I’m not here to cause trouble. In fact, I help more than you think. Every night, I can eat up to 2,000 ticks, along with other bugs that carry diseases. I also help control snakes, even the venomous ones. My body is built tough, I can survive dozens of rattlesnake or coral snake bites, and I even eat venomous snakes like they’re just another snack.

My blood has something special in it that scientists have used to help make treatments for snake bites. Without me, there would be more pests, more snakes, and fewer lifesaving cures. So if you see me, please don’t hurt me. I’m out here working quietly to make the world safer for all of us.

Have you ever seen 🐝 bees drinking dog urine? Or butterflies🦋 on poo? Why do they do that?

Bees and butterflies can get trace minerals and salts from urine and sometimes f***s that they can't get from flowers or pollen. You may often see butterflies congregating in damp areas along gravel roads for the same reason!

"Acupuncture for Anxiety—Yes, Really!"

Did you know acupuncture isn’t just for pain? It can also support emotional well-being.

Many of our patients with anxiety, noise sensitivity, or reactivity find calm and comfort through acupuncture and herbal medicine. 🌿

🧠 Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system by releasing endogenous endorphins, promoting relaxation without sedation.

Gentle and safe. That’s something to wag about. 🐶💆‍♂️

Last Gift of Love

I have performed many euthanasias in my career. It has always been an honor to provide a good death, a humane death and to be able to give that last gift of love on a pet care-giver’s behalf. I have always done euthanasias in the hospital. But one experience changed my life and how I want to proceed giving that gift.

The clients came in with their amazing pit mix. He had been with his person on a long journey, helping her through an abusive relationship and nasty divorce. That blocky beautiful face was there for her new marriage to a loving husband and for the birth of their child. She and I sat on the floor of the hospital room, talking. Red was tired; the cancer had made him a shell of the dog he was. We put him on some great medicine the previous week, and bought him quality time with the family. But it was time, they decided. He wagged his tail, looking lovingly at his mom.

Then the husband said to me, “You know, he just loves truck rides. He was so excited on the drive over here…” He paused and choked up before he squeaked out, “I was thinking, well wondering…can we do this with him in the truck? He would be so happy…” the big burly husband’s voice cracked and a tear slid down his stubbled cheek.

I paused for a millisecond and said, “Yes! Yes, let’s have him in the truck where he would be happiest.” We got Red in the bed of the truck on his favorite blanket. The weather was beautiful that late afternoon. He lifted his head, looking as proud as can be laying in that truck bed. Then both husband and wife hugged him. He gently placed his head in her lap and crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
