🐾 Let’s Talk Dalmatians & Purines! 🐾
Did you know that purebred Dalmatians share a unique genetic trait that affects how they process uric acid? Unlike other breeds, Dalmatians lack the ability to convert uric acid into allantoin, which can lead to higher uric acid levels in their system. This isn’t a disease—it’s part of their genetic makeup, history, and something responsible owners should understand.
Because of this, diet matters. Foods high in purines (such as certain meats and organ proteins) can increase uric acid levels, which may contribute to urinary crystals or stones in some Dalmatians. Luckily, most issues can be successfully managed with proper nutrition, good hydration, and awareness of their specific needs.
This doesn’t mean Dalmatians are a “high maintenance” breed—but they are a breed that requires informed care. If you are considering adding one to your family, it’s important to know:
✔️ Their purine-sensitive metabolism is NORMAL for the breed
✔️ A balanced, appropriate diet keeps most dogs healthy and problem-free
✔️ Understanding their genetics helps prevent avoidable health concerns

So how do Dalmatian owners help prevent stones?
It’s simpler than people think—consistency and awareness go a long way:
🥣 Proper diet — Choose foods with moderate purine levels
🚰 Float the food — Add water to meals to help dilute urine
💧 Adequate water intake — Encourage regular drinking; consider multiple water sources
🏃 Regular exercise — Helps overall body function and encourages frequent urination
⏱️ Plenty of potty breaks — Dalmatians should not “hold it” for long periods
🧪 Urinalysis 1–2 times per year — A quick, inexpensive check that can catch issues early
👀 Watch your dog potty — Make sure they are urinating normally and not straining or blocked
⏳ Allow proper growth before neutering — Waiting until physical maturity supports healthier urinary tract development and may reduce potential stone-related risks
These habits not only reduce risk—they empower owners to catch changes early, when they are easiest to address.

A quick note on LUA Dalmatians:
There are Dalmatians today that carry a gene allowing more typical uric acid processing, known as LUA (Low Uric Acid) Dalmatians, resulting from a historical outcross to a Pointer in the 1970s. While LUA dogs resolve concerns related to uric acid, LUA does not automatically mean a dog is healthier, superior, or improved from the original Dalmatian breed characteristics, as some breeders market them as —but that’s a post for a different day.
✨ At Crescent Hill Dalmatians, we believe education is key. All of our puppies go home with detailed information in their puppy packets—including a list of specific ingredients and foods to watch for—so new families feel confident in supporting their Dalmatian’s health from day one.
Dalmatians are loyal, intelligent, athletic, and full of character—but they aren’t the right match for everyone. Learning about their unique traits ensures that both you and your Dalmatian can thrive together.
