Happy National Vet Assistant Week to our two wonderful assistants, Morgan and Diane! They are the right hand women to the clinic. They assist the veterinarians and technicians in running diagnostics, help the technicians in surgery with prep and cleaning, filling prescriptions, answering phone calls, and you may even see them facilitate your tech appointments and so much more! Thank you both for all your hard work, you make a difficult job so much easier!

What is Coggins?
Coggins is the common name for the blood test that screens horses, mules, and donkeys for Equine Infectious Anemia.
What is EIA and what are the signs/symptoms?
EIA is an infectious virus that affects the immune system. While some animals are able to carry the virus without showing symptoms, other horses/mules/donkeys will suffer from very severe symptoms of the disease including irregular heartbeats, swollen legs and abdomen, general weakness, anemia, a high fever and even sudden death.
Coggins is recommended as a yearly/preventive test and it is legally required prior to travel. All fairs, boarding faculties, race tracks and stables require it.
How can your horse/mule/donkey get EIA?
EIA is transmitted through mosquito bites, horse flies, deer flies or stable flies that have fed on an infected animal. Once infected with EIA that horse/mule/donkey will been infected the rest of their life and must be strictly quarantined.

We celebrated our wonderful CSRs all week last week! A different snack theme everyday! They have one of the hardest jobs in the clinic and we appreciate the hard work they do every day!

Fun Fact: Our CSR's: Kathryn, Molly, Casey & Lauren, have an incredible combined total of more than 45 years of service to Rainbow Veterinary Hospital!

Our CSR's are the forefront of our practice. Every single client and patient crosses paths with one of these wonderful ladies, whether in person or on the phone.

We may celebrate them a little extra this week, but not a day goes by that we aren't grateful for all the support they give to our clients, patients and their teammates on a daily basis!

We couldn't do what we do without them!
