That Summer heat is officially here, and we at Fetch and Focus cannot wait to enjoy it SAFELY!! 🏖

To keep our dogs safe we have three things we always do: know the signs, watch the dog for those signs often, and prevention prevention PREVENTION!!

Watch for the signs:
Check in on your dog often!! Watch what their tongue is doing as this is a huge indicator for temperature. You can also feel the inside of your dogs lips to see if they are hydrated. Wet = hydrated and sticky = needs some water. The biggest thing here is to make sure you are checking on them every few minutes.

Know the signs:
So how do I know how hot my dog is? Well the easiest way to tell is to look at their tongue! Panting with their tongue in their mouth means they're alittle warm but they're fine, panting with their tongue slightly out of the mouth means they're getting hot but they are still fine (but do make sure to keep them hydrated here and stop in the shade here and there), panting with their tongue extended and rounded at the end (shovel tongue) means they need to cool off NOW, and if their tongue is hanging out to the side or WAY out of their mouth that could be the beginning of heatstroke! See photos below for examples. If your dog is shaking, vomiting, drooling, in addition to panting they are likely in heat stroke and need to be cooled off then taken to the vet! If this happens, move them somewhere cool right away and use cool (NO ICE/ICE WATER) on their legs/feet, belly, and arm pits as well as a fan to slowly cool them off. Using ice or submerging the dog can send them into shock, just stay calm and let them cool off slowly.

Prevention:
First and for most watch the weather and know what temperatures are too hot for your dog's coat type (if you cant go out, maybe play some enrichment games inside)! Next check the pavement, hold the palm of your hand on it pressing firmly for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for you its too hot for them, maybe try walking in the grass next too the path, otherwise stay inside. Offer your dog cold water VERY often, ice is a great option for dogs that aren't already in heat stroke. Let your dog swim or dip their feet in water!! Cooling the feet/legs works wonders for regulating your dogs temperature. And lastly find some shade!! You'll have to cater to your dog often on these hot days, you may have to stop your walk multiple times to sit in the shade for a few minutes. Bonus points if you have a cooling mat!

As promised, we had another very special experience here at Fetch and Focus!! Our beautiful, amazing, talented owner in the Indy/Carmel area is getting married!! To celebrate, we took a girls trip to Florida for some shopping and relaxation! Heartly and Clementine of course accompanied their handlers and not only were they well behaved as always, they had a wonderful time at the house as well! Expect another post with more pictures soon, but for now we hope you will join us in telling Bre congratulations! We are so excited for her and for whats to come!! 😁🐕‍🦺💞

The gorgeous man had his first 4-hour day training session!! Azul is with us to work on his relaxation and advanced obedience skills. He already has the basics down, but is learning how to stay in a solid heel when asked, lie down and relax in busy spaces, and how to keep calm while other dogs are present. If you notice he is missing some fur, dont worry! He is a blue Doberman and hair loss is a common problem associated with that coat color. He is very happy and healthy, and not effected by it at all. Azul has been doing absolutely wonderful already and we are so excited to see his progress!

We had a very special day here at Fetch and Focus yesterday as our North owner/trainer graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology!! Not only will this degree help me (Olivia) in teaching owners, many of my classes focused on animal behavior and learning!

Yesterday was a wonderful day surrounded by many friends and family. And for a service dog, this kind of environment can be alot!! There were bells being rung, confetti being popped, people cheering, lots of sitting and standing AND walking (including walking across a stage of people), all while the weather was wet and rainy! But Clementine and Heartly were absolute champs, even sleeping through much of the chaos. We wish we could have gotten more pictures of Clementine but due to the weather, the graduation schedule changes kept us pretty busy!! You'll just have to trust us when we say she was amazing!!

This is just another reminder of how lucky we are to be surrounded by people who support us both as a business and as individuals! We want to give our clients the absolute highest quality care backed by knowledge, experience, and genuine passion for what we do. We have some more big news coming soon, and cant wait to see what the future holds!

Save the date!!! On June 13th we will be attending the Paws at the Hall event in South Bend, IN! The event is dog friendly (just remember to never let your dog greet another dog without owner permission first) and will even have a costume contest AND an agility course!!

Entrance fees are highly encouraged and are only $10 per family, these donations will go towards the St Joseph Humane Society. There will be donation bins for non-monetary donations as well, and if you can't make it to the event but still want to donate, we are collecting items and can bring them to the event for you! Just send us a message or leave us a comment and we can get a plan worked out! Towels, blankets, wet and dry dog/cat food by Purina, cleaning products (bleach, laundry detergent, etc), all make great donations but anything you are willing to give is greatly appreciated!!

Our booth will be FULL of fun things for kids, families, and of course dogs!! Heartly will be greeting people and performing tricks, we will have dog themed temporary tattoos, treat baggies for sale, and a few raffel baskets as well! Our raffel baskets will include items such as treats, toys, p**p bags, pet wipes, puzzle games, and even Dr Harvey's all natural freeze dried dog food! And thats only the beginning!! We will also have education about service dogs and therapy dogs available, as well as deals and information on our training programs!

We are incredibly lucky to be invited to this event as a vendor and we absolutely cannot wait to see everyone there!

Not every training session is about perfection sometimes the biggest wins come from the small moments we sometimes overlook.
The calm check-ins, choosing engagement over distractions, recovering quicker after excitement, settling, walking past triggers with a softer response, or simply learning how to exist confidently in new environments. Those little moments build the foundation for everything else!!

Cicis last day train focused on exposure, neutrality, and working through real-life situations instead of only training in controlled environments. Public outings can be overwhelming for dogs AND their handlers, especially with new sounds, people, smells, carts, doors, food, and constant movement happening around them. The goal isn’t to shut a dog down or expect robotic behavior it’s to help them learn how to stay connected and make better choices despite the environment around them.

A lot of training is patience and consistency. Progress is rarely perfectly linear, and that’s okay. Some days feel huge, some feel slow, and some sessions are simply about showing up and ending on a positive note. What matters most is building confidence and creating a dog that can think through situations instead of just reacting to them.

Really proud of the work being put in and the growth happening little by little. Cici is thriving!! Good dogs aren’t born they’re guided, understood, and worked with consistently. 🤍

We have some exciting news for our North (Mishiana) location! We are now offering the same day train program as our south trainer!

Day trains are 4 hour long sessions in which the trainer picks up your pup for a day out! These longer sessions allow for us to train your dog in the environment they would benefit most from; this could be places like lowes, parks, hiking trails, and more! It also allows us to spend as much time as your dog needs on specific behaviors.

4 hours is a long time for a dog to train, and we wanted to create a program that served as a good 'all around-er'. During our time with your pet we also provide enrichment time, play time, and rest time. Plus other services at no extra cost such as baths, haircuts, and nail trims! Our day trains also frequently make stops for pup cups and other snacks (always approved by the owner first)! These are highly customizable sessions and are a great option if you: are looking to start training, want to continue/brush up on training, want your dog to burn some energy during the week, have a reactive dog who needs one on one care, or are just looking for a new fun activity involving all around care for your dog!

All day trains will come with a 15 minute "recap" session to ensure the owner can continue the training at home and truely benifit from it, as well as pictures and updates throughout the day. We also have dog safe seat belts available during car rides to ensure extra safety! We are so excited to be offering this service at our North location, please feel free to reach out with any questions!

Murphy came back to see us again today for a groom!! He was much more confident this time, and even allowed us to dry his face a bit today! Murphy also got to hangout with Heartly and Bash, he was so polite and sweet (as always) but he preferred sitting next to us on the couch! We always love having Murphy and cant wait to see him again soon!

Maeve and Banks are on lesson 9 and did SO well today! We are beginning to wrap up their sessions by moving on to real world applications of training. The process of translating what a dog learns in training to that of every day life can feel challenging, but we have taken it one step at a time and Maeve, Banks, and their family have done such a wonderful job! We love seeing just how eager these two are to train, they are such a delight to have in our program! Reports say both dogs are now napping as their outdoor training session (which included some play time) really took it out of them!! 😂🐕💞

First Day Train for Marlow 🐾🤍

Dog number 2 from the Doodle Duo!

Today was all about building structure, clarity, and calm confidence from the very beginning. We focused on creating a balanced training day that blended obedience, real-world exposure, and relaxation so Marlow could start learning how to handle life with more neutrality and focus.

Throughout the day, we worked on structured obedience, engagement, loose leash walking in public, impulse control, and place work. We gradually increased distractions to help her stay connected and responsive even when things around her got more challenging. A big focus was also teaching her how to settle and relax in different environments, not just “work” in them.

By the end of the session, we layered in longer duration calm work to reinforce patience and reinforce that slowing down is just as important as moving forward.
AND of course we got a pup cup to end the session just right!

Really proud of Marlow for showing up, trying, and starting to build a solid foundation for what’s ahead!! This is just day one, and she’s already making progress 🤍🐾
